Exhaust and pEtrol smell in series one

After a dabble with a series 2 a few years ago I have relapsed and just become the proud owner of a 1984 series one rx7. Evertyjing is groovy but it stinks of petrol/ exhaust heavily anyone had similar issues or know of a cure. The guy I boiught it from says the carb may need setting up different.!
The steering is also very heavy is this normal. The other rx 1 had, had power steering. P.S this is my first post so be gentle on me and thanks in anticipation. :wave
