Hiya guys

been looking on the yank forum and they all have nice clean engine bays

during my day dreaming of a clean car i spotted some thing :D :D

if you look in the pics - whats they thing circled ??

i have asked the yanks and all i have got is :

*********************************

Judging by the hose connected to it, it looks like a vacuum chamber, but I\'ve never seen one on an FC or in any of the FC FSM\'s. The shape of it (matching the sheetmetal underneath) and the spark lead clips make it look like it\'s a factory item. Where does it connect to?

*********************************

I\'ve been working with fc\'s for a while and I have never seen that before.... And like above, I don\'t think I\'ve ever seen it in any fsm or haynes...

*********************************

It looks like a vacuum tank, maybe to support the brake booster?

Where does its vac hose go?

*********************************

so - can we beat the yanks and find an answer :D

Well there is a vaccum pipe going into the top and the other 3 wires are just held in place there.

When I removed mine I noted it was hollow, cant remember if there was any other pipes on it?

Prof

That\'s clearly an overhead sausage valve  :p  :)  :Giggle  :rollin

In all seriousness - I don\'t know.  Did the US cars have an external atmospheric pressure sensor ?

The yank cars may have it on the opposite side if it has something to do with the brakes !!!!

Just got meself all wet looking at my engine bay - guess what - I have one of these do-hickies as well.  :)

The vacuum line goes into a T piece, and then one leg passes through a check valve and into one of the solenoid valves, and the other seems to go direct to a solenoid valve - Perhaps it\'s some kind of \'air\' capacitor  : :3Confused

thats what i was asking you that time stu! i was scratching my head about what it does and posted up on here - got told to just leave it!  think someone with time should have a dig around in the FSM?

OOOOHHHH STU its Bomb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL don\'t say that too loud i\'ll have fifty armed police braking the door down..

Nar its a Breather int it.

All i do know for a fact is mine went south when i fitted my Microtech and lost all the exess pipes and Bin food.

Iwan

should be the one for twin-scrole function on TII. Like vac- tanks on FD to help the actuator moving..... it will collect vacuum, the vac will move the actuator to open the flap on the exhaust manifould.

still remember,
NO ROTOR, NO MOTOR !

Prof

So it is some kind of \'air\' capacitor.  Thinking back to my school days - which was a long old time ago, these used to be called resevoirs me thinks.

Looking at pictures of US cars, I can\'t see that they have this - but perhaps I was looking at EGI\'s

Can anyone with an EGI confirm if they have this gizmo - if they don\'t that would guarantee it\'s something to do with the turbo then. :)

have no resevoir on my EGI.....

i was on the phone to pip last night - and quizzed him

basically its a emissions control thingy - the yanks dont have it - as they dont need to

and he said - leave it where it is

so thats the simple answer :D

It\'s down in the book as a vaccum chamber IIRC

(was gonna post last night but I caught my chair on the power button!  :Giggle )

Ricco - which book was that ?

I have the service manuals and parts books in pdf, but could not find hide nor hair of this lil\' beasty  :3Confused

Would be interested to know your source  ;)

Followed the pipes around today (bit drier than yesterday), and found the line that goes from the gizmo through the check valve (1 way) goes to the orange solenoid.

From another source:

FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR - this is on the end of the primary fuel rail. There is a nipple on the lower intake manifold pointing towards the firewall that is its vacuum source. When in doubt, check the vacuum diagram in the shop manual - stock, the source nipple connects to the vacuum spider, goes to the orange solenoid, then back to the FPR. The only thing the solenoid does is switch the FPR\'s vacuum reference from vacuum to atmospheric pressure. There is NO DIFFERENCE in driveability or starting with the solenoid not there.

So the gizmo is just a buffer for vacuum for the orange solenoid to use, and this will only be in affect when you restart the engine warm - it\'s designed to increase the fuel pressure to prevent perculation in the fuel rails, and cuts off after about 30-40 seconds.  :)

I love Grinders threads - you learn so much :D
