Whoops looks like the RX8\'s are not liked by all people have a look at this http://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=353079  Cant please everyone all of the time, not sure what they are saying about oil consumption. Don\'t think the Rotary\'s drink that much. Now shall we start a bun fight or let them stew in their ignorance  :yes . What you think people.....cheers Leigh.

DOn;t think they\'re being any harsher about th e8 than we would about their hairdresser cars though... ;)

They seem to quite like the 7 though :)

Most people will always see the RX7 as a good looking thursty unrealiable car, which is a shame, as its not something you realise thats isn\'t nessessarily true until you have owned one...... it would be a shame to see the RX8 get tared with the same brush....I\'m mean yes they do use oil faster than some other cars but not so much so that you need complain about it.... My 450 bhp impreza i used to own needed oil more often that my RX7

Carl

RX8\'s do use alot more oil than the FD RX7.
I hate to say it,but it is true,in many respects they are right on the thread.
If you are prepared to put up the the RX8\'s foibles then it is a good car.
It really does need a bit more torque lower down the rev range though,if it did then it would be a great car!

Should have turbo charged it... sorts out most problems with the power!

Often when folk are jealous of something, they just bitch for the sake of it..............
4 seats - 2 seats. Rotary - Vtech. Best handling - not best handling.

Nice to know the RX8 bothers them soooooooo much.

They are DIFFERENT. Doh ;-).

My controvesial thoughts on my RX-8...

My RX-8 uses a LOT of oil (actually a little too much) - we are doing oil consumption tests on it at the moment.  It is using almost 2 litres per 1000kms which is twice as much as it should be.  It has just over 44,000kms on it.

My E60 M5 uses a lot of oil also, the Porsche Cayenne twin turbo uses a stack of oil - so it isn\'t just the rotary as mentioned above.

Gotta say the main thing that annoys me about the RX-8 (my auto) is its lack of power vs the amount of fuel it uses.

Still love the car, handles and stops amazingly - but already it is showing signs of wear and tear.  Been through a set of brakes already from one track day, second set of brakes are wobbling now also (through the peddle).  It has been recalled back to Mazda a few times for various things.  It has had around 5 ECU fuel map upgrades, torque converter has been replaced, engine mounts have been replaced 3 times, and it is still awaiting another set of new/redesigned engine mounts (as the vibrations are quite bad on idle etc.).

Mazda could have done better I think, it is meant to be the pride of the fleet - so you do have to question why some of these things have occured.

(I should be pro Mazda here shouldn\'t I! - but I do think that the RX-8 could have been better in many ways).
Thanks,

Ianmcurtis

Hi Glen. No controversy in there ^, just fact. My first 8 had several recall/replacement parts and I\'ve no doubt that my present 8 will have some problems, as I\'ve already got rust on the chrome wheel nuts. Good job the warranty is so good.

It\'s not as though Mr Honda gets it right first time, every time and I\'ve no idea how long the s2000 has been around (or am I that bothered) so it should be better in many ways. Where is THE perfect car.  Surely it\'s not the s2000?

In my experience when driving my 8 it seems that most other car drivers are out to prove that their car is faster - and, in most cases their car\'s are! Yep, I\'m an 8 owner who acknowledges the shortfall of power on the road. On the back roads I\'m not so certain of the amount of confidence other drivers experience from their \'faster\' cars as they always seem to be straight line merchants (any other 8 owners experienced this?).

Like I\'ve said already, if it bothers some s2000 owners enough (as it obviously does) that\'s their problem. I did note however that a couple of guys spoke favourably of the 8, so it is just the sad, jealous types bleating after all. Personally I don\'t have a prob with s2000\'s, they are supposed to be a good TWO seater sports car.

Perhaps it\'s just some of the owners...........? :-).

I agree with Glenn, as he says the amount of power for the amount of money it costs to run it isnt fantastic. For example for similar money a DC5 Honda Integra type R will give up to 40mpg on a run and 20-30mpg when you are thrashing it, beats the sh1t out of the 8 for torque and probably in the real world power too, it will probably not need rebuilding for 200,000 miles and is one of the best track cars I have driven. Saying that, the RX8 looks beautiful, has a lovely feeling gearbox, great brakes and handling. IMHO the car should had forced induction from the start as the FD\'s fuel consumption seems little different from the 8\'s but the FD has a lot more torque.

I disagree about the DC5, the DC2 Honda is more of a Trackcar than the DC5 is plus it sounds like you are in a race car when driving because its stripped out !!!

Love them, They do hold their value well in Japan, if I was gonna have a trackday car it would probably be a DC2 Integra, fairly quick but handles like its on rails !!

Anyway, its nice to know that they do like the RX7 though. I thought the S2000 was a fabulous car when it came out but its become a bit like the Audi TT - a bit stale and bland now. Look at the 350z Roadster, a much nicer convertible. They havent done anything to the S2k ever since it came out, no body bits, shame they didnt make a Type R version....missed opportunity if you ask me !!

I still like that camou MX5 with Rotary Engine on the Tokyo Auto Salon thread....my idea of fun !!!

I have owned both, the DC2 makes a better sound, but thats its only + point over the DC5. The torque is so much better from the DC5 and the stability is far better. I love the DC2 though, awesome motor. btw the DC5 is also stripped out with lightweight glass etc.

Not only that, but you cannot buy a DC2 anymore and I was comparing more like for like with the RX8.

Oh and trust me a DC2 aint stripped out like a race car, it still has some sound deadening, my FD has none and the sound in car is unbearably more. ;)

Lol mate about your car.

Went and looked at a DC5 as our local Honda dealer are selling import ones, at first I thought they looked amazing, especially when seeing them against Civic Type Rs but whilst I was looking I was watching people come out from the garage and stopping and staring at my RX7. It make me feel smug and realise I had a better car and how bland the DC5 is compared with my 12 year old FD. Went back to it with a hoooge smile on my face lol.

Best thing though about the Hondas is the engine is almost bulletproof, there is an awesome EK Civic Type R in this months J-Tuner, like those a lot better than the later model. Although the new Civic Type R looks pretty good.

He He, nice too see some constructive replies to this post and very mature outlook by everyone. It\'s no secret that my wife has an S2000, so we often look on S2K site (and she\'s a paid up member). I have seen lot\'s of post\'s regards the RX8 and felt they often gave it a hard time.

So thought it was about time we could share judement\'s on both cars. Like I said felt Mazdarotary member\'s have given a more honest and non-biased reaction. My wife is giving me grief in the ear for this  :rollin , coz she think\'s I don\'t like her car. Point of fact I  think apart from the Rx it\'s gotta be the best handling car I have had the experience of driving. It\'s steering is spot on the brakes are magic, seem\'s to stop faster than mine, and it\'s pretty damn quick for a natuarlly aspirated 2 litre.

My verdict is both car\'s have plus and minus point\'s, but the thing they both have in common are their Japanese and well put together and thats wot I luv about them :InLove. Cheers Leigh.

Wow...  I kinda viewed the S2K and the RX8 as along the same theme...  I came very close to buying the S2000, but I wasn\'t too keen on a convertable... I\'m single, so the rear seats aren\'t a big deal... but then they are handy somtimes... The cars look very similar too!

As for the car, well... it\'s very tame at low revs... and it\'s not exactly a rocketship... but it isn\'t slow either, and is really nice to drive... puts a smile on my face anyway.

I\'ll have it for a long time...

Not sure where this oil business comes from... I think the longest I went between checking was 1500 miles,  I like to keep it topped up, but mine will usually make 2000 miles before it reaches the minimum marker...

I wonder what the actual reliability of the engine is compared to the S2000?... Fuel consumption isn\'t great, but it does get more competitive with other cars the more enthusiastically you drive... I was out with a friend in a BMW 325 coupe, and on the motorway, his consumption was way better than mine, but we got of onto a few country lanes, and he was working really hard to keep up, and almost evened out the consumption for the whole trip... since I was barely cruising...  Like zevans said... any corner, any speed... hahah.

And finally... who would mis the chance to be a member of MRC by having a Honda?

i dont think the s2000 and rx8 are in the same class. 4 seater coupe vs 2 seater  convertible sports car. The mx5 is a closer comparisson to the s2k imo
