would  215 / 45s be okay or would people suggest wider?

It depends on the width of the alloy, but on my Probe I\'m at 225/40s for 18x8s and I have nowhere near as much power to put down :) That\'s also fairly narrow for an 18x8 as well.

I\'m running a set of mazdaspeed rims: 17"x8  and 17"x9 (rears) and I\'ve got 235-40-17 and 255-40-17 on the rear!!

If money is a problem (like it was when I got my tyres) go for the Nexan rubber directional tred with a V groove pattern, 255\'s cost me £64 each and I\'m pretty impressed with them to be honest!! I dont get any :burnout  which I was expecting, and they are a fairly soft compound and grip very well in all weather!!
