Hi,
they could be many reasons for bad idle.
On 85-88 cars, the TPS can be faulty resulting in strange behavior of engine speed and idle. Check your TPS settings with voltmeter, but do this when the engine is realy warm! Othervise you will end in wrong results.
Maybe you have a vac- prolems? Faulty gasket? Or the previous owner did put the BOV on the car and forgot to block the hole on air induction pipe (the one from AFM to Turbo). Or your AFM is faulty or stuck.

the air pipe is blocked ( i think )

humm tps - will read up about that

the thing is here - i cant get the car warm - it wont idle that long :(

i bet the tank is empty of petrol. try putting a fiver in, mine wouldnt idle as the fuel was too low.

grinder

yeah not a bad idea actually .. the fuel light is on - and its stuck on ramps aswell

i may chuck some more in to see what it does

ended up siphoning a gallon out of the coupe last time !! :D

LOL :-D

will start not that complex next time :P

PS. open your tank and remove the fuel-pump assambly. There is a filter at the end of the pump, which is probably clogged, replace this one and you should have no probs on fuel side. (maybe you have the same problem due cornering when the car stalk ?)

Its not part of that secondary air system that these engines have is it ?

Taking a look at the manuals that I downloaded from the 1300cc website, the pdf of the air cirtuits looks pretty complicated

It seems these are no longer on that site, but if your stuck for a copy, I can email you the section 4b which is for the Turbo car.  The Haynes guide has some of the diagrams in as well.

Seems there was a lot of extra plumbing to get the car through emissions in the US - some of it can be removed. ;)

I had an idle issue which turned out to be the inlet gasket - so it could well be unmetered air getting in !

Good luck in finding it

Cheers,

Prof

Grizzly

On my car this had a pipe coming off it to a plastic charcoal filter type thing under the drivers side innerwing.

My vert had one untill i fitted all the block off plates.

Grizzly

So does it still sound like the exhaust is blowing? What happens? Does it start ok? or take alot of turning over? once its started does it run ok then get worse or bad from the second it fires?

Have you checked you have good comp? Do the top plug out and turn it over thing. You should have three nice loud and even PHssss noises.

grinder

right ..

1 - it will start and run - just
2 - as soon as i rev it - it then stalls
3 - there isnt much juice in it
4 - not compression tested it YET - cant find a tester
5 - the pipe for the charcol thing it fitted to another pipe ( dont forget its an S4 , not an S5 )
6 - i know my TII doesnt have this on the car
7 - it still sounds like its blowing from somewhere .. just no idea where
8 - we did a very very very basic comp test on the front rotor - it looked like a tire depth gauge - so you couldnt really tell - and the answer from that was 55 - just no idea 55 of what though !! LOL - although that could mean 4bar - which is uber bad

thats about the size of it at the mo - im not gonna do anything until i comp test the engine - which could take weeks :(

this car might not be as cheap as i thought ... :(

The easy way to make sure its got enough comp to start is take the egi fuse out, then remove the top plug of the rear rotor. Turn it over on the key.

You should hear even Pshss noises. when you have done the rear replace plug and do the FT rotor. much the same nice even Pshhh noises.

If all that is ok. I\'d remove the IC and check the rubber hoses etc for leaks. if there is no Big holes in anything, Try swaping the plugs from your Coupe to the vert and try it.

grinder

chris - i was thinking the same about the plugs to be honest - brett says the make a world of difference

not sure what to do

1 - hunt down the noise
2 - get it to run

i will try the psssshhh test - sounds like fun ! :D

Grizzly

yep do the Pssshhh  test then you know the engine is good.

Plugs

Check for split IC pipes etc

If i was you i\'d be removing the turbo and get that sorted.

grinder

but i dont know if it is the turbo matey ????

to be honest - i bet i could walk outside now and it would fire no probs

its a bugger to start after its been running though .. again this could be crap plugs

i had to start it last time ( after it stalled ) by clamping the fuel hose

a better desc of whats going on

1 - me and a friend put all the exhaust back on
2 - started her up
3 - first touch , no revs
4 - was a bit lumpy
5 - goes to back of the car - check the exhaust , they are fine and sound ok
6 - car still a a bit lumpy
7 - quick stab of the throttle and she reved straight up , sounded fine ( just noisey )
8 - let go of throttle completly
9 - revs fell to 0 - therefore it stalled
10 - if it was only on one rotor i wouldnt expect it to rev that freely ??

does this help :D ??

if it was only on 1 rotor would it be vibrating really badly ?? - it wasnt - im just asking :D

because i cant get it to idle that well - i cant set the tick over - i dont know if to just turn it up slightly and see if that helps

all i can say - is that when we bought it - we jumped in , fired her up , drove her down the street and onto the back of a trailor - would this be do-able on 1 rotor ??

the guy said it drove fine , just sounds bad

now Adam confirmed this , he said she ran bad at tick over but would drive at 70 all day long ?

and he did say that it quietened down when the car had been ran - although i though this may be bad as when it warms up - metal expands ??
