Lower emisiions????

Hey guys is there any way to lower the emission on a car with a cat?

The wifes got a FTO GPX 1995, and its just failed its mot on emissions, the cats ok as far as we cn see but was told to heat the cat up well before the next test..lol any other ways to decrease the emissions?
