Hello people, this is my first post on the site although I have checked it out a few times before :)

My name is James and Im from Scotland, Im going on 21 years old and want to buy a 3rd gen RX7 as a sort of project car. Ive wanted an RX7 for a really long time now and intend on getting one before the year is out. (preferably sooner rather than later ;) ). I obviously don\'t know near as much as most of you lads who post on here, and I\'ve found decent RX7 sites quite hard to find, so if anyone can help me out it would be really appreciated.

I intend on buying an import RX7 from Japan, the thing is im a fussy boy and want to know that the RX7 has not had a rebuild as Ive heard rebuilt engines are very common. How can I be sure that the 7 I buy has not had a rebuilt engine? What exactly do BITMA certificates tell?

I frequent sites like, //www.neweraimports.com , //www.powervehicles.co.uk , //www.japvillage.co.uk , //www.linney.org and quite often fall in love with some of the 7\'s that are on sale (especially newera.com\'s). I have also found a few japanese sites with RX7\'s which have had some modifications done to them and look amazing. For example this RX7:

Would cost £8,333.207. Could anyone give me a rough estimation of what the extra charges would be? - (SVA etc etc) and is it possible to hire someone to sort everything out for me? As I feel quite nervous to tackling Japanese and internet language converters... arent too accurate to say the least. Im not going to state my budget quite yet, but the car above probably gives you an idea of what its in the region of.

I would ideally like a Type-R :). Twin Rotary, twin turbo, 275bhp.

I have also heard that quite a few parts need uprating in order to maintain engine longevity etc (oil cooler, radiator?). If anyone could list the parts I would be very grateful as obviously I want my car to run as well as possible without constant paranoia of some engine part meilting or something!

One last question, Im 6ft3 - Will I fit in an RX7 comfortably?! One of my best friends bought an Impreza Turbo and I have more than enough room in it, the lexus IS200 was also a nice fit, I\'ve also drove a Z3 and felt it was a tad cramped (I thought it looked similar to the 7 in size). The pictures Ove seen of RX7 interiors look spacious enough for someone my size, but feedback would be appreciated.

I apologise for the size of my message but if anyone can help me out then I genuinely thank you.

P.S A LOT of people on this site have very. very nice 7\'s, you shoudl be proud of yourselves.

Thank you for your time :)

ok where do i start? firstly i hope you got my pm:D  and welcome.

the re-built engines thingy, its not bad if the cars had a re-built engine as they all need re-built about 50-60000 miles(some go longer but thats the general magil mialage)So it could be a bonus for the car to be rebuilt, it can save £££ further along the line.

as for the importers newera are great, there buyer miguel is on these forums too, also BNA_ELLIS is a 3rd gen importer, he only imports these cars, i think his site is worth a look its called rotary imports . Both would be happy to help with your questions.

The car in the pics is stunning, i like the bonnet on it alot:D , although if thats the price of it in japan(yen->£££) then your in for a shock, you\'ll pay a huge import tax, sva MOT and shipping. It could cost 17-20 grand, again BNA will beable to estimate this better for you

uprated parts? Yes it can be better to uprate the cooling to the engine i.e intercooler, radiator, removing the pre-cat and the ast. Just remember when modding for power it MUST be done properly.

If your 6\'3 then the rx-7 will be a bit of a squeeze with the standard steering wheel, a smaller aftermarket wheel would help, although it would still be quite small. Remember its a sports coupe an scoobie is a fast family car.

I\'d recommend you go and see one there tiny in real life in comparason to in the pics.

hope this helped.

Having just done it - other costs include:

Cost of Car - £xxxxxx
Shipping - about £500
Customs Duty - 10% of (cost of car + Shipping)
VAT - 17.5% of (cost of car + shipping + duty)
Shipping Agent fees - £100
SVA (if the car is under 10 yrs old) - £450 (includes foglight + speedo update)
Registration - £125 (includes 6 months tax)

It gets quite expensive very quickly...

QuoteOne last question, Im 6ft3 - Will I fit in an RX7 comfortably?!

I\'m 6\' 3" and had a drive in Clives 3rd gen at JAPS and was very impressed with the amount of room ... the best advice I can give is to get yourself down to one of the shows (or a local garage or maybee a local forum member?) and see if you can sit in one.

P.S how do you guys afford 3rd gens  I\'m 22 and I can no way afford to pay £10K for a car

Well im 22.  Im unemployed right now :(  but when I had a job £500 per month into savings account.  I have been doing this since 18, though do sometimes have to go into it but its there to cover car maintenance as well as saving for the future.

Used to leave about another 500 a month to live on, so not too bad (im boring and dont do much which helps!)

MikeLMR

ahhh I presume you don\'t have house then ... I have a savings account but its for a house not a car (they\'ve just doubled in price in my area  )

having £10K in a car would worry me to much anyway

J4P RX

A 10k car did worry me, but I have built up to that:

5k on GT4 at 18
Pulsar at 19
FD at 21 so its been gradual.  Now I have to get a new one its a bit worrying to think what else I could spend 10k on though.

Luckily I have a place to live for now, so there isnt much else :D

New car here I come :)
