Well, my garage is all empty as my Rex has gone for an engine rebuild and possible power upgrade at Haywood Rotary Engines.  Carl and Ian (at least I think the name\'s Ian - apologies if it\'s not, I\'ve got a terrible memory for contacts) had a little look over her and are going to get back to me soon about exactly what needs doing.  Looking forward to hearing from them and I\'m keeping my fingers crossed it will be good news!

It\'s funny.  My rex was sitting in my garage almost unused for about three months.  Now my garage is bare and its gone in for its work, I want to drive it so badly!  I cant wait to get it back.  There\'s quite a bit Carl\'s looking over for me though, so I don\'t know how long it will be.  There\'s:

Engine rebuild (including replacing the blowing lower inlet manifold gasket).

Hopefully a mild port - depending on what else may be wrong (fingers, legs and eyes crossed!!!).

Clutch being looked at.  Long story:  Took my Rex to Mr Clutch and had my front bumper cracked in three places, they broke one of my undercar neons, skimmed the flywheel and charged nearly as much as a new one, kept me waiting for a week for the right clutch to be delivered, called me a liar to my face when I told them they offered me a 10% discount on my original quote and then charged me way over the odds for the job anyway!  Carl\'s looking at the clutch for me to see if it\'s any good and looking specifically at the thrust bearing and pilot bearing due to a dodgy grinding noise - damage blaightantly done by Mr Clutch.   Suffice to say, never take your Rex to Mr Clutch - especially the one in Acton, London!

Lower exhaust outlet - the gasket on the turbo\'s is being checked, cos of a popping and the amount of fumes overpowering the cockpit - could just be the lower inlet manifold gasket tho?!?

The exhaust system is just being looked at after slight contact with an overly fat sleeping policeman!

Slight oil leak being examined from the front of the gearbox - rear of the engine portion of the vehicle.

With any luck, there will be no nasty surprises and I will be able to get her ported too!  Carl\'s been really helpful so far and I am completely happy trusting them with my baby!  ;)

Sounds all very expensive mate    At least you\'ll know that the car will be pretty much sorted - all the problems sorted like.

Hope it all goes well.

All the best,
Jon

Hi eyedee
Im not defending them, but surely horses for coarses.
Chloe knows the owners of Mr Clutch and I would not take my RX to them but we took her KA and they sorted it with no problems or dramas, and at an unbelievable price.

Your cars in the best of hands, It\'ll be worth the wait. It\'ll be back from Carl and then time will seem irrelivant

eyedee

Hi Jon,

You have no idea how much this cars cost me over the past year (obviously! ;)  ) - a lot.  Thanks for the good wishes.  I\'m sure it\'ll be A-Ok when it\'s finished.

g11ary, I took it to Mr Clutch because the chap who owns it who spoke to me over the phone (Dino I believe the name was- but I could be wrong) initially promised me a 15% discount on the original quote.  Plus I needed it doing quickly at the time and no one else near me could look at it for two weeks.  Also, they are supposed to be experts of their trade, and lets face it; on the whole, a clutch at the end of the day, is a clutch.  But they were incompetent, unreliable, under-equipped and unable to complete the job to a satisfactory standard that they were more than willing to take on.  And they cost me £500 of body work damage manouevering my vehicle onto their premises which they would not take responsibility for.  I was almost forced to call the Police at one point.  There is nothing much positive I can write about the experience - in fact there is nothing positive I can write about the experience.  Sorry...

Still onward and upward, and I\'m sure this experience will be a lot better!   :wave

g11ary

Sorry youve had such a bad experience from them, Chloe has known them as friends for probably ten years, I have only met 2 of the sons. So cant comment on there overall service. And Im certainly not defending that sort of service.

Good luck with the car, I know these dam things take ya lives and bank balance over.

It\'ll be worth it though.

eyedee

Sorry!  It\'s not my intention to upset anyone, and I can appreciate you and Chloe have a different relationship with the garage owners.  Maybe it was just bad luck, a combination of many unfortunate events - it\'s quite possible, and I am in no way bad mouthing the chaps from a personal point of view.  It was just a nasty experience.

Thanks for your thoughts though mate and I\'ll let you know how it goes - I am really looking forward to it!

Cheers  :)

Hi mate,
As said, I would not take my RX there, and take no offence at all, what a person is like as an aquantance has no bearing on his business ethics.
If he\'s in the wrong, he\'s in the wrong.
Hope you sort it, or name and shame.
Good luck Gary

Well, all is coming along swimmingly and it looks like it could be finished in a week or so.  It turns out my rex is in very good shape and nothing I feared might be damaged actually needed replacing.  The oil leak was due to a dodgy seal in front of the gear box which looks like it was damaged during clutch fitment, but thats sorted so I only have one last decision to make...

DO I GET HER PORTED?!?!?!?!  This ones got me stumped!     My heart says yes, my wallet says NO!  ;)   :rollin

Hmm...

g11ary

Since when do we listern to our wallets, you know it makes sense.

Glad its turn out better for you.

One quick, and silly question... what difference does porting make to the fuel consumption?

I would have thought it would make the fuel consumption a lot worse? But then again I\'m usually wrong. If it does make a difference, how much roughly?

Cheers
Jon

Ha ha!  lol!!!  :rollin   :rollin    :rollin

Too true!   I recon the RX-7 was Japans secret weapon to help cripple the UK economy!  ;)

I have been told a mild port doesnt greatly affect the fuel economy under normal driving conditions, only when you open her up - which is most the time come to think of it!  :D  apparantly, a mild port eats approx 2 miles per gallon more over standard and a street port up to 5 miles a gallon more - someone please correct me if I am wrong.  :)

I think you\'ll struggle to find a Rex owner that can drive their car economically.

I\'ve only been driving my Rex for about 3 weeks now, so I\'m still in the honeymoon period, but I still seriously doubt that I\'ll ever be able to drive her economically - I just can\'t help opening her up!  :rollin :rollin
