Evening all!

Ok, it\'s getting near to new car time (probably august) and I\'ve wanted an RX-7 3rd Gen since I first saw one in \'96.

However, I only have enough space for one car and I\'m a surfer. SO I need a car that is reliable for the daily commute and one that I can get a roofrack for, so I can sling my boards on the roof.

SO bascially, how realiable are RX7\'s (got £15-17 K to spend so want as new as possible maybe spirit R or late RZ) and can you get roofracks for them?

(Please say they\'re reliable and can get roofracks!)

My experiance is that they are very reliable, as long as you maintain them properly, and don\'t have to many mods.
Don\'t know about roof racks, I wouldn\'t of thought so.

Hi there,

Surf boards and roof rack  ? Not too sure about that!;)

But getting hold of a Spirit or late RZ will be very difficult. Import rules changed early last year, meaning it is very expensive (therefore virtually impossible) to import an RX later than 97 (I think). You therefore need to find one already in the country. As far as anyone seems to know, there are only 3 Spirits in the UK, and probably just as many 2000 RZ\'s. They would of course demand a high premium if one were to come up for sale!

Mind you, there have been late spec RXs for sale, they do come up for sale occasionally - I saw several in Autotrader when I was looking late last year, so you will find one, just probably not a Spirit or RZ.

There is a slightly modded one in the for sale section at the moment, for 19k (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12287), gives you an idea of what you can get for your cash!

You could get roofracks as an option. Doubt the option was ever taken but I have literature showing it.

Thinking about it, weren\'t they advertised in the UK brochure?

I was under the impression that the new import rule only affected modded cars? is that right?

I\'m after a stock RX-7 if possible? can anyone clarify this?

//www.modelreports.com has some background on the rules relating to them and they do not only apply to modded cars.  I do not think anyone has a model report for late RX7\'s which is why they are so difficult to find in the UK.

Compiling a report means documenting every aspect of the car in standard form so that any import can be judged against it. It would be very expensive but once completed could be rented out to other importers to use for further imports. People compiling the reports on a commercial basis prioritised on import volumes so the shoguns and people carriers etc went to the front of the queue and RX7\'s etc to the back!

One UK importer did mention they were working on it a while ago but it is a pretty big undertaking and a financial gamble in the current market.

Have alook here, from Newera Imports:

http://www.neweraimports.com/faq.htm#loophole

A long discussion on the changes.

Interesting paragraph further down the page:

"Sadly some cars like RX-7\'s will most likely be impossible to successfully test for a model report, as emissions will not be met, since a rotary runs in some ways similar to a 2 stroke engine, although as currently most people want older models, RX-7\'s aren\'t really affected. "

There is light at the end of the tunnel!!
We (RX-HEAVEN Ltd) in conjunction with Model Reports .Com are in the process of building a model report for FD3S RX7
The vehicle is currently at the research facility at Dunton for testing to comply with Euro noise & emissions.
Progress has been slow, we have been involved with this project for more than 6 months, but I think we are nearly there.
I will place a new post when the model report is available. This will then cover the import of all standard cars with a chassis no starting with a 4 , Later we should be able to cover the chassis nos 5 & 6

Does that mean the model report is revision specific (i.e. if you\'re using the revision with chassis number starting with 4*****, the report cannot be used with 5 and 6)? Do you need to therefore use a chassis number 5***** and 6***** RX7 to generate more model reports for these?

The model Report will initialy be for revision 4******
However we think there will be a way to link this report to the later revisions
