I am new to the group and this is my first post, I\'ve really tried to find my problem using the search system, but can not find anything the same.

Sorry it\'s a little long but guess all info now is the way forward.

I have just got my 1993/L Reg (I think Type R II) got the number plates on yesterday as I imported it.
its at 53,000 miles no engines mods as far as I know other than a full stainless/titanium system I think the engine is original but do not know for sure, there is a few new looking nuts and bolts on the top of the engine.
fantastic condition, unmarked interior, well looked after I\'d say with very expensive WORKS rims and Bridgestone NPG coilovers, weird rear spoiler with built in washing line lol!! and unknown front end, no accident damage.

Anyway, the main problem being at full throttle it sometimes makes a horrible metal to metal type clicking sound, I supose simular to pinking on a normal car, but shorter and much louder.

I\'m sure it\'s not a good thing!!!

I\'ll list other problems in case they link together.

1. sounds like it\'s missing at tick over when warmed up the engine actually moves when it misses a beat

2. again at full throttle, it sometimes (most of the time) misses and if I continue and then change gear it normally pops (mini flame out the back)

3. When ticking over, if I give it a tiny bit of throttle it sounds like it\'s flooding, a steady rev clears it then it\'s fine, unless I let it tick over again.

4. Black smoke when doing number 3. also when reving but guess this is normal

5. the second turbo tends to work when it wants, seems okay if applying throttle softly.

I had it MOT\'d last week, major emission problems and the guy said there seems to be a build up of old oil behind the turbo, been there a while he says. I must say when engine is hot I can smell burning oil (from the engine bay)

GOOD POINTS

Starts fine hot or cold, no blue smoke other than a little at start up. (TAKES 2-3 SECONDS ON THE KEY TO START)

No over heating or coolent loss

Any good advice would be most welcomed.
I\'ve had a REX before with no problems so kind of rushed into this one maybe, it does look cool though lol!! but wondered if I should have maybe kept the Mitsubishi Eclipse turbo.

While I\'m hear, anybody local to me North Lincolnshire/Humberside area and any iddea where the nearest REX Specialist is (just in case eh?)

Cheers

Sounds like detonation to me!In fact i am sure it is.
Do not drive your car hard until it is checked other wise terminal engine damage will result if it has not already.Your apex seals may already be damaged from the other symptoms you have mentioned which would mean a rebuild.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
If your car is running an open exhaust and or an induction kit the stock ecu cannot accomadate this and so runs lean, any mods like this need to have an aftermarket ecuthat is programmable such as an Apexi power FC.Then it really needs to be mapped to run at optimum for what ever setup you have.

Thanks Carl, something I did not want to hear (sounds to me big money)
Is there anyway of confirming this at a normal performance garage? as I\'m from Barton-Upon-Humber, North Lincs and do not know of any RX7 Specialists, but I\'m 60 miles NE of Sheffield and 70 miles E of Leeds if it\'s of any help.

Do you think all my problems are related?

I really thought the Apex seals were okay, as the pressure gauge is one notch from the 8 (or is this gauge shite) it starts okay hot or cold. etc

I noticed something this morning which maybe a cause of something??

Looking at the engine from the passenger side wing, the bottom left plug looks wet with oil and a little rust, I cant get to it to see if it\'s lose, god knows who you change the plugs? from above or below

Thanks for your input Carl.

try http://www.wgtautodevelopments.co.uk/

Iknow they are the otherside of the Pennines, but probably the best "up-north".

There is also Jimmys in Norwich http://www.jimmys-rx7.co.uk/

Cheers Jon, detonation!!! seems to be the problem of the metal to metal noise.
Sounds like it\'s due to the titanium system, which I find suprising, you would think the factory ECU would handle such a small mod.

My Mit Eclipse turbo was factory 210bhp which was raised to 297bhp and 397 ish with the 100 shot of Nos active and running the standard ECU along with fuel mods of course.

Anyway Carl get off the phone!! been trying to ring ya!! lol!!

The pressure gauge is oil pressure only so won;t tell you much about the actual state of compression on the rotors or any detonation issues.  This should be around 2 at idle when warm so if up at 8 constantly then it;s either broke or you have excess oil pressure in a big way

plugs are easier to change from underneath - did mine at the weekend.  I\'d swap them out and see but as carl says take it easy until you know what the deal is.

Judging by the symptons i think you need to get it to a specialist asap really. try not to drive it around as its just making it worse matey.
