Hi
I\'m writing a piece for the RX-8 forum that is intended to illustrate the meets are as much, if not more, about people as well as our cars. Names will be included so there\'s no test required.

Sorry you didn\'t get more cars turn up,

We tried to hold our Spring Rotorshow there in 2007 but precious few arrived so we didn\'t do it again, however as you can see below, those who came enjoyed the day out.

http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38196

Real tough finding finding venues that lots of people want to attend together, tried polls and all sorts over the years but never found a clear solution.

We have two meets that really work for us all for socialising etc, one is the Spring Rotorshow at Brooklands and the other is Rotorstock, the rest, even the big Jap shows will only ever bring a few people together.
All the best Clive

could have done with a few more attendees but it took us long enough to organise 4 cars for a photo shoot:Giggle

Clive,

I think we agree it can be a little difficult - We were upto 12 cars at one stage - only 6 turning in and one of those wasnt even a Mazda let a lone a rotary (but we like GSB and his new c\'eed)

Anyway we will keep trying - at the very least we are all having a good time:wiggle

Ken has got a plan - come to think of it more of a strategy for the complete domination of the Wessex area - would like to tell but cant :spank

Quote of the day amongst many was \' sex on wheels\' this was not a reference to me on roller skates but to a particualr car

if anyone (who was not there) can guess which car - they will win a prize (yellow RX8 model with lights and sounds)

I cant wait for Kens write up

:cheers

Introduction
When Farmer Oak smiled, the corners of his mouth spread till they were within an unimportant distance of his ears, his eyes were reduced to chinks, and diverging wrinkles appeared round them, extending upon his countenance like the rays in a rudimentary sketch of the rising sun. (Far From The Madding Crowd â€" Thomas Hardy)

Did we laugh? We all but wet ourselves at some points.

It was with immense pleasure that Jim bestowed upon me the role of official correspondent for our Wessex trip.  I, in turn wished him many cracked teeth and choking on the 6 sticks of rock I brought back for him from Cornwall.

The organisational skills required to put on a group meeting like this are not for the feint hearted and I’m pleased to say they were mostly present.  Our initial concern over leaking 4 of our intended troops to the preceding Bank Holiday and 5 more to work/football/weather on the day, were turned into an opportunity for us to blag/negotiate our reduced numbers out of a wet grassy field and onto the exhibition area.

  Venue
Haynes International Motor Museum, Sparkford, Yeovil, Somerset, BA22 7LH. www.haynesmotormuseum.com

They are a registered charity with over 400 vehicles and frequent special events like the Rare Breeds Car Show we went to.  If you gift aid your museum entrance fee they get the Tax back.  You get free re-entry for 12 months.

  The Meet
The following may amuse or bemuse the reader and dare I say it, abuse the sensibilities of those attributed to some of the events depicted. Here’s what made the day special.

The day started at various unsocial hours to allow for traffic that never materialised so early refreshments were consumed in that other worldwide establishment with a big M.  This turned out to be fortuitous as we learnt later in the day that Haynes doesn’t do a manual on how to run a cafe.  They should.

  Big M
Gossiped about the latest clubs/forums news.   Would have been a manly debate but we wanted the girls to feel welcome
John asked his son James what he wanted to eat to be told ‘food’
Liam and Vivienne arrive in his RX7 FC that’s recently had a 13B rebuild.  I introduce us and ask about the scaffolding on the back of his car.  Liam smiles politely, he’s tall.  Vivienne has driven an 8 but it feels too big, she’s tiny and has a lovely smile
Jim tells us all to follow him to Haynes as he’d checked out the route.  I promptly forget this and lead us all a different way (to the sat nav) back up the dual carriageway, so our engines can get warm.

  Haynes Arrival
At the gate, I hijack Jim’s preparations, and when offered the grassy field or possibly the exhibition ground if it’s too wet, simply ask (with a smile) for the tarmac now if it’s not inconvenient
Mel tells Jim he’s not allowed to get his cloth out (heard many names but that’s a new one)
We park up, me next to a Ferrari 330 GTC.   Get out my leather to dry my RX-8. Ferrari lady asks if she can borrow my chamois so leather shared with Ferrari.  The rest of the group laugh at me, because I‘m worth it
Nearly finished and look up to see Liam’s RX7 being pushed as it which has overheated in the 5 minute trip from big M
Alan and Jennifer have vanished, busy snapping away.

  Rare Breeds Car Show
This falls into 2 categories: excellent to good - Ferrari 330 GTC, AC Ace with Lotus V8 ; some bad, Reliant 3 wheel ‘cabriolet’ and Zimmer for sale at £35k

  Haynes Museum & Shop
The first main hall is full of red cars so we call it The Red Room.  So do Haynes, spooky.  Alan and Liam liked the red room in particular, so naturally they have a blue and a white car
Jim walks to back of a Ferrari Dino and misses a classic opportunity to knock himself out on the bl**dy big metal pole at the back
‘Hmmm, Aston Martin Lagonda  â€" sex on 4 wheels’ says Nigel
While passing under a ‘Pratt’s’ sign â€" ‘I have series 13 of Dallas on DVD, Nigel
What’s the difference between a Rolls Royce with a small back window and full back window? Answer, the name of the car.  That’s not the way round Nigel put it, but you get the gist
Standing in front of a 1973 911 RS Carrera , Jim’n’John appear to moan ‘yes’ in unison, very loudly
Dawn and Mel are spotted enjoying themselves, looking at cars!  They like the 1931 Duesenberg Model J Derham Bodied Tourster and a 1931 Cadillac Model 452 v16 Madame X , they also like the front opening bubble cars with no reverse gear
Liam and Vivienne were somewhat pre-occupied getting the RX7 towed home but still found time to enjoy the Red room, Countach in particular.  Vivienne loved the interest visitors showed in the Green Flag vintage tow truck.  Both report enjoying the bouncy driver’s seat in the low loader that Green Flag had to send to get the RX7 home.  Best wishes on a speedy and warranty paid fix for your 13B intermediate plate
We had a giggle on the arcade games, nothing like real driving though.  Apparently, I only beat Jim in a SEGA rally head to head race by cheating.  Well I had to Vettell it somehow.
Interesting announcement overheard on a staff radio, a car club had arrived and spaces were needed as they wouldn’t be happy parking on the wet grass.  We’d never felt so German with our RX-8 ‘towels’, except Nigel who’s apparently of Prussian descent, which may explain his fondness for Albanian car washers.

  Haynes Fact
Haynes is an International Motor Museum taking the view that the complete history of the automobile and motorcycle can only be covered by looking at the developments from all over the world.  Does their complete history include the Rotary engine? I didn’t see it.

  Cafe
Jim’s highlight was 3 local dogs approaching him under the table.  The Jack Russell with a pink collar was his favourite
John let slip that Sky have filmed an episode of ‘it’s me or the dog’ at his store.  John will be proudly appearing on your TVs soon.  Sky hasn’t said when.

  Group Photo
We asked if the track could be used for our group photo.  Thanks are due to Caroline for organising that at 5 minutes notice and being patient when our allotted 5 minutes on track stretched to 15 minutes on how to muck around in positioning 4 RX-8s. Alan’s highlight of the day was the stewards getting twitchy over timings
Photo taken, shook hands, hugs and kisses exchanged, drive off the track, say goodbye to Nigel and as we leave, on the main road, Beep it in second to remind Haynes they need more Rotary.

  Summary
I began with a Thomas Hardy allegory.  Throughout the day we did what friends do best, we just clicked, gelled, got on, and had a good time.  There are numerous groups of friends in this club, one or more will be nearby.  Please go to Events and Meetings to see which group is local to you and the Club Calendar  for an overview of the meetings over the months ahead.

Our next meeting will be Sunday 26th Cars at the Course â€" Windsor Race Course  Anyone is welcome to join us.

  Cheers
