This i must admit is my technique. Initial warm up at tickover shut down check levels 15min run check levels again then drive it like you stole it. Whilst it may not be right by the book it works for me may shorten the engine life by a fraction but how many engine live to a old age anyway?

Drive it like you stole it!!!!!!!!!! Just drive it normally.......... :guinness

Quote from: RixioTotally different approach but...

What about abusing it...as the car is going to be abused for its lifetime???

Not if you want to keep a warranty!

1000 miles!:2eek  I use to run my race piston engines in on the track. In fact the last engine did about about 30 or 40 miles on the rolling road, then was setup for fueling, then given decent beans in one 15 minute practice session, then was raced. Mind you, it was stripped down every season (about 300-400 miles at most). A lot of this was due to the tolerances and way the engine was built (it raced the rest of the season very very well)
Carl, what is it like for getting a fresh rotary engine ready to race? Given the car can\'t be driven on the road at all. I have run engines in on trackdays before - although that alternates between boring (keeping revs low, etc) and hilarious (still going faster than a lot of other drivers with a \'running in, please pass\' sign in the back :D )

This rotary world is taking a lot of learning!
Mind you, 1000 miles isn\'t too bad. It was nearer 10,000 miles before the V8 in my road car stopped feeling tight and reved. Big old American pig iron!

So no one subscribes to the ***very controversial*** piston method describe in detail here:

http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

It isn\'t drive it like you stole it, but it is making sure you get maximum compression as early as possible once everything is warm... Basically I beleive this method works for piston engines, as does a few motorcycle teams I know but the rotary is a different beast ;)

You\'d still want to get the seals matched to the housing ASAP right?

Ceramic seals take alot longer, say around 2000 miles before they really start to feel good.
Of course,it does very much depend on the type of mileage done too.

That\'s how I ran in the race engines. The most miles one ever did before being raced was about 100 miles, all quite hard and fast.
I also ran in the V8 in a similar way, and that has made more power on the rolling road than the factory figures, and other cars of the same type on the same day. Now heading for 50k miles in 2 years with no problems or oil consumption.

But the rotary is a very different beast. Yes?

Dont worry Carl was just asking cos after speaking to kev about it i didnt know...

Il follow whatever you say guv, as long as you dont limit my car to 98mph :Giggle

P.S will call you tmrw :)

My WGT warranty note says keep under 4000rpm and don\'t use full throttle for 500 miles, then gradually raise revs and throttle untill 1000 miles when it is then run in.

Pip put a limiter on mine to stop me going over 4.5k.. he must not trust me :(.....

..... how right he was! :3gears-lh

It really does work a treat on piston engines!

But rotaries... Now, as the inside of the housing is smooth to begin with AFAIK then the corner seals just need to flatten to that surface right?

Mines 700 miles since WGT rebuild, there was a boost leak so never got it above vacuum for 500. Fixed the boost which now peaks at 10psi  (I\'m sure Pip said he\'d limited it to 6). I\'ve maintained RPM<4500rpm and never pushed more than 1/3 throttle.
Brief but regular low pressure boosts must be the way to go near the end to position the apex seals under some strain, they move in and out and waggle up and down too!
