Out and about. Smooth running again with the new pump, filter and hoses. Just need to make and put in new gaskets for the distributors & sockets now & then we'll be up and running. Almost forgot how wonderfully low Noriaki looks when parked alongside Chihiro...

He can make a scary face, too!  ;)
Keep forgetting I need H4 bulbs on H3 sockets. Or could just go H3. Not a lot of driving in the dark up here in summer...  :D

That's a R2 compatible H4 bulb, not a H3 of course. It's getting on 35 years since I worked at a service station...  ::)

Some very nice work there; good bracketry for that pump and good dashboard work  :13:

Nice or not. Decided to completely re-do the fuel pump and filter assembly. Moving it inboard to save it from the dirt and get some ease of access. Meant drilling two more holes in the fuel filter cover to let the fuel lines and wire through. Pump uses the original mounts, but from the top. The whole assembly, filter and all, will be mounted inside a battery box for protection.

How to:

Pump sits in the original mounting, but standing inside the boot instead of hanging behind the rear wheel. Drilled two additional holes in the fuel filter inspection lid to allow the out-going fuel line and the wires through respectively (see earlier post). The in-going fuel line goes through plate's existing clamp hole. Only marginal widening needed. Box is fastened on top of same inspection lid using longer bolts. Box should protect the assembly from potential loose objects in the boot area (did I hear baggage?). Since Facet pump is quite vocal, I added a bit of sound proofing. Changing filter or pump is now a matter of minutes, rather than hours, and inspection only requires the lifting of two lids.  ;)

Upgraded fuel system now appears to be working (fingers crossed). Only a proper test drive will show whether the new setup has solved the misfire/faltering or whether the cursed Nikki has more evil tricks stored up its nozzles. Fuel pressure regulator should improve the odds. Currently set at 4 psi and idle and revving sounding fine.

Also, got the temp gauge working again. So the dashboard refurb also covers dials and switches – everything works (bar the radio that has no speaker yet). 😅

Noriaki's been tried, tested and successfully MoT'd today. Won't run a 100% until that Nikki has been replaced, but at least we can get some drives in (weather permitting) before our short, arctic classic car season ends.  :great:

Sorry the video above went black. The lighting wasn't good, so decided to delete it. Thing is, my GoPro isn't very suitable for filming indoors & the lighting in my garage could do with improvement. But now we've had a full two days without rain (Would you believe it!), here's some proper images of the new inboard fuel system. And some little Mazda sounds to go. Enjoy!
