Noriaki is still in s-l-o-w recovery. His carb still refuses to work optimally and the doctors are reluctant to release him from the ward. The owner's withdrawal effects are getting terrible. The Pack Mule is benefiting from the extra wait, getting fully refurbished in the meantime. Desperate times, desperate measures... :))

Hmmmmm, whats the issue with the carb, not something like float level is it ?

Runs way too rich on idle, because the stage 2 butterflies won't shut properly. Looks like carb sucks in extra fuel from over there when car is idling. So question is how to make them shut. Tried a number of carbs and parts, but problem prevails...  >:D

Thought I'd might as well restore the original grille and emblem while I was waiting. And when that was ready, the long-awaited phone call came in. So more long distance Rx2-driving next week.  :great:

That should not make it run rich, just a faster tickover.

It's so long ago, without checking my own car next week I cant tell you if the butterfly idle is set up on the primary's or the secondarys.

Quote from: Eccentric shaft on June 28, 2023, 07:33:28 PMNoriaki's engine is out and has been thoroughly examined. And declared utterly dead and gone.

The pathologist's report holds some interesting findings. Firstly, the Rx7 rotors had been fitted with carbon seals, which sort of explains why the thing lasted 25,000 kms in the first place. One of the rotor housings had the chrome layer peeling off anyway, so that one is shot.

However, whoever did the job had left out a few other essentials: The tensioner for the chain that drives the oil-pump was missing, so the chain had been left chipping away at the eccentric shaft counterweight, causing severe damage. Six of the seals for the oil and water channels were missing, so coolant had seeped into the oil and into the combustion chambers. Also, one of the distributors had begun shaking itself to pieces, which might explain the wild backfiring going up the last tunnel. Was lucky it held together for those last 466 miles!  ::)

Well, may the cursed Frankenstein Engine rest in pieces. The new twin-dizzy 12A goes in tomorrow!  :great:
Wow, I was going to ask who rebuilt this and put forward names of some usual suspects, but as this is a family show, we can Iill-afford slanderous content.

Hope you're keeping well old bean?

Crikey I hope I have better luck, I've stripped that much off the carb, converted to mechanical secondaries, Im amazed it even bolts on, there are so few parts

Wow, I'm a bit behind with posting. Too many things have gone on. Just back from a 600 mile drive with Noriaki in strong winds and (the final 3 hours) pouring rain. The new engine is in and MAN does it pull! And, and, and... Will take a few posts to cover it all. Let's start with this:

Today, Noriaki got a proper wash for the first time since 2020 (yes, really!). And stripes (DIY job by Yours Eccentric), and a good wax and polish +++. In short, he's looking his good old handsome self again!

Thanks, good rotary people! You have certainly done your parts on this journey! Huge thanks to Totte for the engine build and all the extra work on the carb. We'll need to get hold of a good original carb to get the idle optimal. And there's a few more details to sort, but it runs and roars and pulls like an express train. Very pleased! Note that custom made exhaust manifold. The very skilled welder did the job for free. Thanks to all the wonderful people (Mazda people and others)!  :sign0098:

PS: The internals of that replacement muffler melted on the way home! Noriaki now has a thundering bass. Suppose he has a lot to compensate for, having been silenced for so long :))  :))  :))
