Its not exactly revolutionary. Yamaha were using something similar in the late 70s with their Yamaha Power valve system YPVS.
The only difference was they used it on the exhaust port but for the same reason combating better efficiency for low power outputs.

The valve rotated in the exhaust runner, was "closed" at low rpm and made the exhaust port much smaller, then it gradually made the port larger as the revs increased.

A fantastic way of broadening the power band and gaining some more torque.

What is positive about this is the fact that it means rotarys live longer, but im still scratching my head to how this "new tech"/ old tech has been granted a patent. The second question is why apply for one? its not like anyone else is making rotaries. Mazda must have money to burn lol
