Hi all. :wave
I\'m a new owner of a \'93 rex, this one - http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10617

Being new to rotories I\'m a bit nervous and concerned about a few things.

Starting has been fine up until yesterday. From cold I had to turn it over 2 or 3 times and play with the throttle a bit before she would fire. Fine when hot but she\'s done it twice since too. I have on a few occasions started her up and then switched off, thats a bad idea right? I did that twice today, and then when I wanted to take her out it took a lot of cranking before she burst into life, at which point a load of raw fuel was sprayed out of the exhaust. I\'m guessing I\'m flooding her. I\'ve monitered the water level and it\'s not loosing any at all. There is a small amount of creamy stuff in the oil filler neck, but from what I\'ve read this is normal.
I also replaced the battery negative terminal as it wasn\'t gripping the post properly, have I messed things up by resetting the ecu?
When I went out for a drive today, then idle speed which has always been between 700-800 rpm had dropped to 500 rpm. I sitched the lights on and the idle jumped up to 750 rpm, I then realised I\'d not driven the car in daylight before so always had the lights on, is it normal for the idle to change according to electrical load?
The thing is, I know she needs a pfc as if I throttle hard the boost will reach 15 psi so I\'m not booting it. I intend to get one next week but theres no point if she\'s going to need a rebuild.

Thanks for any advice...

Rob.

You sound like you already know your problems.
Starting the car up then switching it off is not good and will flood the engine, probably why its hard to start up. Normally when the engine is on its way out its harder to start from hot.

The cream in the oil cap is normall this time of year. There was a tread on it start of this year or about this time last year. If you do a search you should be able to find the tread but it is an old one as I said.

Not to sure about the idle as I think it can vary from car to car but am not sure. Maybe a problem with the battery?
Resetting the stock ECU will do no harm. Often this can get rid of some problems that occur. I know Ive done it and it was recommended to me by others.

An Apexi will not guarantee to sort out your boost problem. I have a problem with mine at the moment too. A boost controller should sort it but again this is not a guarantee. It could be something else like your wastegate.
An Apexi can hold up to 2 boost settings but im not clued up on how it works. Just fitting the Apexi might sort it but then again maybe not.
Whenever fitting an Apexi ensure you get it mapped to get the most from it, will cost a couple of hundred pounds but well worth it.
If you have a local garage like WGT, RE:Worx, Dragon, Carl Hayward, RX:Motors etc etc then they could have a look over the car to see if they can find a fault before you start buyin g a boost controller you might not need.

Hope ive been of some help.

I\'ve got to agree with Steve, you\'ve been flooding it and can consider yourself lucky to not have had to go through the process fo clearing it, taking out fuel relays and plugs and so on.

You\'re excess boost is probably to do with your exhaust.  the thread says it\'s got a full exhaust job and decat done.  You NEED to replace that ECU very soon and stay off the throttle until then - the stock ECU isn\'t a flexible map although it is very rich.
It won\'t fuel sufficiently for a full decat and cat back system with hardpipes and performance induction kit.  You\'re risking your engine buddy so get yourself a PFC or similar and get it mapped - don;t rely on the base map on the PFC with this issue.- That should solve your boost issues withou the need for a boost controller.

Could be a bad earth, and you mention you\'ve just been fiddling with the negative... I smell a rat!

Check all the grounding points as well as the battery, and if they look a bit dicky go and buy a bling grounding kit. :D

No point booting it in this weather anyway ;)
