Good for you!

I was going off what you said the other night about welding an RX8 axle on the arse end.

I though it was a bad idea at the time, unless you can find a different disc caliper combo to fit over 15" alloys.

So..... youre looking for a yank tank back axle to cope with the RX7 power then? LOL

RE: lightened flywheel........ i was gonna stick with the stock one. Interestingly, talking with the cousin earlier he was saying he wanted a lightened flywheel for the track days becuase he found the revs were not dying down quickly enough when changing down because of the increased inertia...

Ill stick with stock for now, its something to possibly play with in the future if need be...... unless someone convinces me otherwise.

now i have the moulds finished I got a sense of nervousness........

Its crunch time! I gotta start carving up a car. No pressure.

God I hope it works ! LOL

Im not overly confident  :dontknow: :dontknow:

I could be settling for the below.

With the quality of those moulds you will be fine.

Now you can really  undress the car

Just spotted this,

No no no. So many people get confused about light flywheels, 100% the inertia is decreased not increased.

First one I fitted to an RX-8 many years ago still leaves me with the impression that it was an improvement because it let the revs die faster allowing the next  gear to be picked up quicker.

Even very early "engines" had BIG flywheels to make use of inertia to help stop things slowing down

Ow, come on you have to show failing's as well as triumphs, just look at my Race car thread, there's some absolute horrors in the before the damn thing started behaving itself  ;)

The moulds don't bother me, it's cutting so much off the car, and not being able to brace the shell, and things moving about.

Hopefully the roll cage will keep things in check, as everything is tied back into the chassis.

I could try and weld some triangulation braces in here n there but I may have trouble arcing up lol

Just gonna tackle one corner at a time, slow n steady wins the race n all that.

I think we're both arguing the same point here, but lost in translation or poor terminology.

It's one for a face to face discussion one day.

So..... The burning question

The 5 speed box.... Do I keep the 231 flywheel, is there any difference from the 192 version, and if I keep the larger 6 speed clutch, will the shaft on the 5 speed still engage, or do I need a different clutch plate?

I need to drive the car first before I can decide on lightened flywheels. It all comes back to whether I can maintain identity of an Elan for the purpose of a road vehicle, and not have to go down the IVA route.

The design features on a 70s car are unlikely to pass all the criteria within IVA/SVA.

I'm not going to waste time bringing a car up to a level to pacify some numpty who makes decisions in Brussels, I'm aware of my building capabilities, I know I can build a car that's safe to be on the road. I know we have to have standards to prevent cars being built from wattle n daub and chicken wire, but the IVA is sooo strict these days and is slowly preventing home builders building cars at home. Bloody Belgians .

So if I can't, it's all out track day weapon.

Real simple this one, keep the bigger 231 flywheel  and clutch assembly and the 5 speed will bolt in as a direct swap. Prop and gearbox wiring is  the same the only thing you will need is the gear leaver to go with the 5 speed gear box as the 6 speed leaver is different.

Hope this helps.

re japi

I agree with Clive

But flywheel, I wouldnt go with lighter one. Thats the only thing that keeps Rennys torque in decent numbers.

Power is nothing without control. Weight is enemy of performance, handling and braking.

Ive heard good and bad for both lightened and stock, Im gonna keep it stock for now, its not a huge task to swap it out at a later date.

I need to get a feel for the car, everything is new, suspension, the geometry, wheels/ tyres, there are going to some bits I like and some bits I don't.

Is this what it looks like in GRP heaven?

Nice to see a baby Elan, a Europa, and a plus 2 like mine all side by side, same era yet very different cars.

Colin Chapman should have utilized the rotary years ago !
