FD storage query.

Ok, so I'm facing the inevitable rebuild. I don't have the funds for it due to my house renovation eating money like a fat kid with chocolate cake! I've toyed with the idea of selling, with Pip at WGT saying he knew someone that was after a tidy FD and wasn't bothered about it needing a rebuild, but I'm too sentimental and can't quite bear to part with the old girl! So I've decided to take her off the road for the foreseeable future and then reassess it all when my house is finished, which could be a few years!

I was just wondering what tips or advice you guys could give me regarding long term storage of her? She will be in a garage and I have a decent cover, but is there anything specific you'd recommend from your experience?

Many thanks in advance,

Arnie.

Well, if you are talking about that yellow beast, under no circumstances do not sell her. But if you do, it has to be for good home...

That in mind, me! Bring it to my garage to storage

Umm, now I'm confused...? :) I thought that you have C's old beast? Or do you have several yellow beasts?

Im assuming shes low comp...and if its gonns be a few years...then several items are at risks of perishing...but the main 1 has got to housings surely. I suppose you dont know condition until stripped but defo seems worthwhile taking preventative measures on them.

Personally every car i get i get under and i literally coat all brake lines, fuels lines, ferrules bolt threads etc with copperslip...either on a brush or in spray form...Rocol do a spray copper slip..to get in hard to reach places. But waxoyl or anything similiar just as good. coat everything under neath..fuel tank straps, suspension arms, everything...

Tyres are goona be shot in a few years so..consider axle standing...that way can rotate wheel and keep discs clean...maybe consider pushing caliper pistons back?

Mine cam from a field think stored 3 years...due to Mazda using quality plated fastners it held up fine....

Fuel id run it down low as poss as fuel will turn to varnish syrup like sticky mess over time...and then expect to change fuel filter on recommission...

engine...drain coolant and flush out antifresh. remove plugs and liberally spray a light oil in all the spark holes etc...turning over to get all the chambers...prob do this periodically whilst stored...

good hoover out inside a nice clean outside...love tap and fingers crossed... :13:

prob better investment than an isa!!!!

Only thing I would add is to make sure you have really good quality anti freeze in the engine as this will stop any internal furring up and corrosion taking place.
All the best Clive

Cheers for the advice. It was the usual suspects, misfiring at low revs, stalling all over the place, low vac in the intake plenum, not pulling anywhere near as hard under full throttle. A trip to WGT and Pip confirmed she was 'tired' and ready for a rebuild. The mileage is about right and I can't really complain as I've had a good eleven years out of her! Unfortunately it will be a few years until I can realistically afford it, so besides selling, this is my only option. Although my other half isn't over enamoured with the idea, she'd rather I sell her and put the money into the house! I'll get under her with some copper grease as soon as possible, although I did have her Waxoyled a couple of years ago! I did think about the axle stands so will get that done along with the removal of the plugs. I'm in the middle of giving her a good once over and a couple of coats of wax to help protect the paint. After that I think I'll have a rotary shaped hole in my life for a while!

She did have a full service earlier this year at WGT so hopefully it should be ok. May just drop Pip an email to check!

No problem. I'm beginning to wish I was the other Arnie, I like the sound of the yellow beast!  ;D
