Hi Clive

I thought i was the only 1 with this issue til the chap with the white Stylus kit car  turbo 2 powered did a recent track day at Combe.

In my qualify the oil came out with such force it came out the bonnet vent and straight into my visor! the engine box and rear undertray of car was covered.  Strangely though this was at the end of the straight at tower. Not in or exiting a corner but right at the end of a 3rd gear pull but its happening.

In a nut shell my feelings are the oil is going up the centre iron fill tube and on occasions makes it to catch tank and once that fills your in overflow situation....but how many times does it not reach the catch tank but in the plastic accordion tube before the filler neck and not in the sump...? ( on an rx8).  and pick up is starved for a second or 2?

In addition like you say do you have to pull engine as if it happens once and you score a bearing its only a matter of time. And i believe it only happened once at combe for me as after my little mod i never got any oil in my catch tank and again have my digi dash set to alarm at 2 pressures...1 stage was on at tickover.

I spoke to you about my little unorthdox mod but i never saw any oil in my catchtank thereafter and that was the penny washer in centre iron to accordion tube of the oil filler. (its now an fd bottom rad rubber mount as it fits a treat). The hole is say 25mm and with and orifice plate in here restricting to 8mm....greatly impedes oil flow up and down....It is a pain to fill up as takes and age and dipstick has to be pulled slightly to break the airlock. But simple cheap solution....mines staying in!

My rear rotor bearing was rattling on the e shaft and i strongly believe the Synionic oil held it together fot a good few track days.

My new sump also was an off the shelf purchase but im sure a standard steel sump could be modified simarily with sump extra baffles hand made etc far cheaper than the complication of dry sump.

Have you got a magnetic drain plug Clive? In addition i used have a very powerful magnet stuck on my oil filter as well to see if any swarf being collected. Gotta be worth dropping oil for investigation.

On other thought im really surprised this issue has not shown up on Japfest tracktime with the rx8 going out or maybe its laptime related ? faster in corners more surge....

another idea that i have not done was plumb the oil catch with a return to the sump....but due to condensation tank and pipes get manky milky so i discard this idea.

defo a combe issue....The Putts lost alot of Engines there.

Thanks Jon,

First up, track was defiantly quicker than Japfest which was why this has shown up the way it has.

Some times the simple solutions are the best so I will investigate restricting the tube as well as a baffle and modding the turbo return, well done.

I will also tin snip open the oil filter and see if I have any debris

I fitted facing down so flush in top of centre iron hole....like a said pig to fill up after oil change though.

Thanks Jon, positives are , although sounding different Turbo is OK as for AFR's I now have the best exhaust colour I have see on the car, running clean enough but I know the map will clean a little more and give more power

Clive there are some dry sump systems out there you can utilise without having to spend the cash on the overly priced mazdaspeed dry sumps.

Carl sorted one for Darren McNamaras rotary powered AE86 a couple years ago. Think it may have been a moroso dry sump pump?

If you can stop the oil from working it's way out but worry about oil starvation take a look at this

Thanks Jim and Grant

I feel that with a Jon idea restrictor, seeing if I can relocate the Turbo drain to the back,if I can get a nice run into it so the oil does not back up,  the Racing Beat baffle plate then vent out back to the catch tank via a long pipe from the front turbo drain, all should be ok

Good to hear the turbo and map appeared to work ok, sorry to hear about the oil surge problem.

Might explain why my engine has oil spills after a track session.

I would also recommend the 'old school' approach of sump baffles. Couple of tin plates welded in to the sump to keep the oil around the pick up tube. Both would need holes in to allow restricted oil flow.

Obviously hope you do not find debris in the filter and I assume you'll drop the oil and check for debris after settling, before deciding whether to strip the engine.

Hi clive, sorry to hear about your misfortune.

Do you know what oil system Umar is running in his 13b?.... i'm sure he is on stock system.  and running very very quick lap times as he won the Time attack Championship. He doesn't appear to have this issue.

Could there be another reason?

Wasn't that due to a constant misfire issue that was never addressed?

Hi Ed,
I suspect he is using the that Carl would have had him fit which dumps the oil back in the engine that I have now found out about.

Shame is I didn't know I had a problem till last weekend, had  I known this could be an issue I would have addressed it long ago.

soz misleading.....oil surge defo a problem for a fast rotary around combe myself, Clive and the chap with the stylus t2 have all had recent oil surge issues there.  pure speculation why The Putts  lost alot of engines at Combe. I used to spectate alot when they where campaigning there they'd defo have a solution......prob dry sump.

How goes Christine???

Your back ;)

After the engine starvation thing I have pulled it apart for a full check over / all is well no bearing problems,

My Synionic  oil probably saved it.

Currently undergoing oil system redesign so Christine can't bite can't bite me again-----------got to, got to,  get this car right for next season
