If it needs rebuild 2k ish but just service mot and remap 3k but thats the gamble. Mot could throw up lots of issues. If it was me id be 2k offer as is lowloader away and take my chances.

Right ok. Il put that across to him and see what he says. I thought it was worth 5k with the low milage, bodywork etc. is there any way of telling that the engine is fine and it doesn\'t need a rebuild?

Compression test. Get it running. Mileage is low but if that apexi not set up right for the mods then mileage counts for nothing.

It\'s not been turned over at all in 18months then it will very likely need a rebuild. I\'ve seen freshly rebuilt fds with very clean exteriors go for 4.5k so IMO 5k is far too much without a clean bill of health from wgt at cost to the seller.

With that said the price of clean fds is on the rise

You are brave to offer such money mate...but I would not pay more than 1k to 1300 pounds. Rebuild cost, run in fuel cost, Remap and if its not a straight forward rebuild, then extra cost for getting rebuild parts will shoot the price up.

My input is mate, buy a sort after FD and enjoy it. 99% of the projects never gets completed simply because people lose interest. There are plenty of cars out there for sale.

There is one Silver FD owned by Rob and its immaculate. I guess he can let it go for 5.5 to 6K. Its a sort after FD and it would not cost you anything near the cost of making this FD fully functional.

I would say, if you dont want the headache, walk away. Buy a car with proven results and your FD ownership would last alot longer ;).

I am talking from experience as I own 5 FD3S\'s ;) and I know how these things empty your wallets before you even know it.

I hope this info helps

I Idealy wanted a red or maybe a black fd3. Iv had a few silver cars, and my current scooby is silver. Lovely colour but I want something that stands out when it\'s been polished like the vintage red. I did say to the guy I would give him close to 5k if everything is sweet.

Right...if I got some specialist to have a look at it. Eg. Get someone down from wgt or get it towed/flatbed to them. If there a definate way that they can tell if he engine is fine without ripping it apart? Would it be worth ringing wgt and asking their views on it? Thanks for you help, a lot more helpful than scoobynet when I was asking questions on there about my scoob, every1 thinks it\'s a joke!

If compression is in the 7\'s and there doesn\'t seem to be any water getting through the seals then it should be ok? I\'m not paying for the service mind, he is, or I am but this will reflect the price considerably. He is a decent bloke and did say he is going to see if it needs anything first before he sells it, which is decent of him. Just seems to be a good opportunity to miss out on such a nice car if I can get it a good price, if I get it for 2k and spent the rest on a rebuild then iv got a mint fd3 for 5k?

Mate, if you tow it to WGT and let Pip look at it, you will straight away get the idea whether the car is worth buying or not! As far buying it for 2k is concerned, my answer is, I wouldn\'t buy it for that price.

A standard rebuild cost you nearly 3k or normally 3k plus that\'s providing all the engine parts are in a good condition. Once, you start adding engine parts that\'s if they are not good, the cost begins to rise and you end up paying 4k or close to it. Don\'t for get, you have to run in the rebuild engine for 1000 miles and the fuel cost to run it in would be high too as normally people people use shell V power.

As I said, 1k to 1300 pounds is the max you can pay for this car! Or buy a rebuild car and just enjoy the summer:cheers

Thanks for your help. Is ther any chance that the engine could be fine? And just need a service? I was hoping someone specialist can come down and look at the car for me rather than me getting it towed spending more money. Iv been looking on the for sale section and ther doesn\'t seem to be any red fd3\'s. I\'m not a member on fduk yet so maybe Ther is some for sale on there? Il speak to the guy and explain what might/will need doing and see what he says. Can\'t see him letting it go for that price but he has to face the facts really, because another potential buyer will do the same, get it checked etc ....

It\'s a nice car mate, but to put it into perspective.....

I\'ve just paid 5k (two days ago) for a rebuilt, resprayed, immaculate fd3. Sure I know there\'s a few little niggles, few trim bits on the inside I might replace, might put different wheels on it and so on..... But it was exactly what I was after. I\'m also first reg keeper of it in the UK and the Dvla registered it as a 1.3 (bonus!)

5k for this is wayyyyy too much unless that engine is perfect.

I no what people are saying and I\'m going to go in with my head not my heart. Nothing needs doing to the car inside or out. It\'s perfect. Spoke to ppi today. It needs road testing he said. He said the water seals tend to go hard and break if left unused for a while. But is ther anyway of checking the condition of these? He getting the water system pressurised and a comp test done, along with all the usual checks. But this won\'t determine the condition only the seals will it? What if the compression is good and the water system/cooling system is fine? Where do I go from there?

End of the day, whatever you do - its a gamble with that car. Yeah, it might pay off and you get a great car but given its history (sitting doing nothing for 18 months) theres a very slim chance of that happening.

Everyone else is talking wise words. Thats why it took me 4 months to choose an FD. There was one I had my heart and mind set on, and despite loving it when I went to see, I used my head and held off. Much like the one youre looking at - it appeared perfect. I just did not have faith in the engine (and the body was a bit tatty in places). The heart of an FD is the engine..... if its knackd then walk away unless the price is right. If youre unsure of the engine in the slightest - walk away - you will not regret it in the long term.

I understand what everyone is saying and tbh I don\'t think il give more than 2k for it. But can\'t see him letting it go for that but that\'s up to him. I\'m in no rush to jump in for 1. I\'d have that 1 for the right price and if it does go bang then iv go the money for a rebuild. That\'s would be what I want. Don\'t think id get 1 for 5k in the same condition inside and out, but it\'s the engine. If the comp is good and the water system is good after a pressure test then were do I go from there? Iv explained the situation to him and he said he\'s going to get it checked out. I don\'t mind getting it towed to pip myself so I know myself off pip. But thanks for all the info, I would of gone in not knowing and had my wallet empty sooner than I would of known :Thumbs-up its good to be on a forum were people actually care and give advice instead of taking the pi ss

Well, at least you\'re listening to people. Theres nothing worse than folks coming on and asking questions, before disregarding any advice and doing their own thing.

My first point though is still applicable - yes you can get one in just as good nick for £5k. I done it just a few days ago.

I know the place i got mines from has a few others for sale starting around £4.5k......

I\'m always up for listening to people\'s views. Especially when I have not idea about something. I\'m in the manchester area so it might be to far for me. But I could give them a call and see what they have? Can you tell me the name of the place mate. Cheers.
