Is it Stainless or Mild steel?

Hi all

I have a question and its probably a dumb one.....

How can i tell if some thing is made from Stainless steel or Mild Steel?

I am thinking its Stainless simply because it was machined mid 2012 and the Mill marks are still shiny (if that makes sense) as its still in bare metal i would have expected it all to have gone dull by now? Plus its sat in the garage since it was made (cold and damp) and there is no Rust on it.

Is there any ways of checking?

Mild steel would have got a light coating of rust in a cold damp place for sure, stainless would be slightly discoloured as it stainless does exactly as its name suggests, it stains less!

If you want to check it you can try drillin it, mild steel fairly soft and easy to drill, stainless is prety hard to drill and will most likely blunt or burn out your drill bit.

Isn\'t mild steel magnetic and stainless isn\'t?

Stand to be corrected.
I started with nothing and I have most of it left

I was thinking about the magnetic point too. Stainless has more chromium in it

I am away from home at the moment but i\'ll post a pic when i\'m back.

There a few Brackets, a Brace for my Turbo and few other bits and pieces. i would like to leave them bear but would only do that if they where 100% stainless.

Bit soft not asking at the time tbh but was more concerned about getting my EFR Turbo.

Not strictly true, it depends on the material properties beyond whether it is mild or stainless.

A stainless is likely to be far less magnetic than a mild steel though as it has less ferrous content.

Its the 8374 :) it was on order for nearly a year.

Who did you order it from? What option did you get! T4 BOV and WG?

Grizzly

LOL

I got it from Fullrace and it has the 1.05ar External Wastegate with the TI coating :) they all have BOV\'s i think.

I\'ve not run it yet but i can tell you its really nice, its an odd thing when you blow the comp wheel it spins like you would expect a BB core to but stops very quickly, after a chat with the guys i got it from they tell me that is because there is 1/3rd the weight in the wheels so there is less mass to keep the rotating assembly moving :)

You should have ordered it from over here, AET turbos have supplied the majority of the EFRs that came to the uk. I would have gone for the I integral WG, just to see if it worked.

Internal Gate looks good on paper but i\'m using a 50mm wastegate and i think the Internal ones where 32 or 35mm some thing like that (much smaller) so i took the safe option :) as the housings are very expensive.

I ordered it along time ago tbh and the price i got it for was a bit better than they seem to be selling for now :)

The Advantage i got with using Fullrace was they knew the turbo very well (they helped develop it) and i got one of there allot BOV assembly\'s as well free.

Back on subject, Stainless like 303/304 is non magnetic, but stainless like EN1.4509 is magnetic.

I have used A4 and A2 stainless and my magnetic bolt dish had issues lol
