Over the last month or so i\'ve been trying to sort out one of my sheds so i can do some polsihing of parts. I\'ve done this before but had lost nearly all my equipment. So i got a new bench grinder and abrasive and polishing mops.

As it stands for now...

Still need to get some other bits but getting there slowly
Had some time today to see what i could do. Got a whole pile of engine parts stored up but decided to just do a small bit and see how i get on. So i did a water pump plate

After going through all the stages of abrasives and polishes you end up with
something like this...

Looks good once the pulley is put back on...

Needs a bit of work to tidy up some parts. What do you guys think?
I\'m hoping to be able to offer this as a service to you guys so you can get all your bits done too but i need to see how good a job i can do myself before i commit to that. I\'ve seen professional stuff before and it looks amazing. If i can get near to that then i know i\'m doing ok

Looks good but with what dit you finish before polishing?
Because there are still some scratches in the surface. So u need to finish with a smaller abresive. Then the result would be much better.
Just a tip :)

What compound are you using on the bench grinder buffing wheel?

Considering how tricky that piece is to polish I\'m very impressed. Maybe consider getting an ultrasonics cleaner for the smaller stuff before you start with polishing? Get all the grime off to prevent any deep scratches?

My dad polishes stuff for his mate ( his mate does up old motor bikes )

So i thought i would give him a challenge :D

Gave him a rotor from shaunwil\'s blown engine .. and this is the result

If you look carefull ( the pic might not show it ) - but you can see the ring gear chewed up and the seals embedded into the rotor :(

cool, i have one like that but not so shinny!

how much to polish a UIM or Alternator then?

Ada7

Thanks for the comments guys. This was only a test piece and as i said does need a little bit more work.
Abrasive compounds i was using are 120, 180 and 300 grit. But they were on older mops which may have had different compounds on to begin with. I\'ve ordered some others so to see how they work out.
After using those you use 3 different grades of polish to bring out the shine.
I\'ve got a rotor to do so will do that and then put up the results, see what you think of that.

Good idea but it quite expensive. Doubt you\'d get even a rotor in that as its really for small items.
Could do the old dish washer trick (without the salt) but not sure the other half would like that to much

Yeh was just an idea, you should try polishing a rotor housing. People would want that as that is a pain in the anus job to do and can be very expensive.

All in good time :D
Got a pile of bits i want to get through to sell on
