well my money is finally sorted and my christmas bonus has come through! i am now ready for ownership of my dream car of over 15 years!!!

been taking a steady look on this forum and others for a while now and have my eyes on what i am after and got the obligatory insurance quotes through etc and i am in the position to own one of these beasts at last!

i have a mild budget of around 4k but i am after a near standard 3rd gen for reliability issues, plus i like to know what has happened to a car!

there are very few standard motors around especially for my budget but i even like the look of some fettled ones! i have spoke to lewis about his purple one up for sale and i know he is no longer that bothered about a sale but i think this is worth a look anyway! the only thing that puts me off that car is the mild tuning it already has (although this is outwhighed by the fact i know its done properly) and the stance of the vehicle not sure the wheels sticking out like that works for me!

anyway!! does anyone know of anything around at the moment that i should look at and also any advice when i do go looking! i am based in redditch just south of birmingham west midlands. any advice positive and negative is very welcome as this is obviously a big deal

Make sure you have a :censored::censored::censored::censored: load of money sat waiting for when it goes wrong is my advice.

In the 6 months I owned mine, it cost me nearly what I bought the thing for on top to actually make it work.

I gave up in the end, decided it wasn\'t worth the hassle.

Of course, for every one of me, there will be 5 who tell you they are the greatest machines ever and are reliable as anything lol

Don\'t put the man off his dream dude! Lol. Take your time choosing one and get it checked over/services by a rotary specialist before you start going nuts with driving it, better to be safe than sorry.

yeah i am very aware how fickle the things can be fortunately i am in a high paid job where i dont need to use my car a lot as i am away for up to 9 months of the year.

and that is also why i have been looking at cars that have had a rebuild by someone i know within the last 20k miles.
i think this way i am covering my own arse a bit.

mikey-t

also how do i become a full member as i am hoping to get insured through sky and there discount system

I might have a couple of options for you if you want to contact me.

I\'m gutted you had to break your car, it looked awesome.

However, for balance I have to say that I bought a near-standard car for a little above OP\'s budget, and (touch wood) it\'s been fine for the short time I\'ve had it.  So there are good cars out there, it\'s just a matter of finding one.

Look for
* compression (cold & hot start, ideally recent compression test)
* water seals (like head gasket failure in a piston car)
* second turbo not coming in (the turbo changeover is controlled by a million little vacuum tubes on pre-96 cars, if these have been replaced or converted to non-sequential then it will avoid this issue)
* clunks from worn rear subframe bushes

As far as mods go, an Apexi is a decent way to keep an eye on temps for track use and opens up remap for more power, upgraded radiator and intercooler help keep temps down, so these are worth having I think.
Moderate intake/exhaust tuning is fine, many cars have had this done.
Personally I specifically didn\'t want single turbos, big wheels, coilovers, or body kits when I was looking for an FD - the standard setup is very good, and as you say, the less it\'s been fiddled with, the more of a known quantity it is.

There seems to be a shortage of good cars for sale at present, so I\'d suggest being patient.

This is about the best I can see for what you\'ve asked for, not a fan of 19" wheels but otherwise seems like a sensible near-standard spec w/ WGT rebuild engine.

It was a poorly put together shed which needed horrendous amounts of money throwing at it to get it to anything like the level I would be happy with.

If (I were insane enough) to buy another one, I would buy a stocker. No offence to anyone directly, but I don\'t trust pre-modified cars at all any more. Regardless of what companies have been used along the way.

Thank you all! I hadn\'t spotted that red one before but I like it even if the wheels are a little ott. I have always tried to avoid red cars due to fade issues but that doesn\'t seem to have suffered.

Carl how would be best to contact you phone / e- mail

Hi there ,, just my 2p ,, don\'t be to put off by the horror stories ,, I have owned , gt4 , mr2 mk2 ,, Audi TT ,, supra ,, an the rx7 I still own an out of all the sports cars I have had the rx7 has been the most reliable , the fastest and by far the best handling , only draw back to owning a unique rotary powerd beast I have found is the people at the local petrol station get to know u on a first name basis lol ,, O an by the way your gonna get loads of people telling u how bad the rotary engine is ,, Fact is get a good car with good engine and drive it how it should be driven , service the beast regular an don\'t do anything that may cause the engine to run lean

mikey-t

i appreciate the advice! i am leaning more and more towards lewis\'s rex at the moment as its had a lot of the "safety" stuff done already and its only money i would be spending after purchase anyway. will do more research and scouting until christmas is out the way then i will start looking in the metal

wolfie1

Whenever im out with mine, usually whenever i get back to my car there is always folk looking at it or taking pictures, then they ask what is it and if i would sell it :)

mikey-t

Looked at a few and still no good! Seems private sales are well above average prices and owners club cars sell so quick,

Will be going to see Lewis car in a couple of days and if that isn\'t suitable the red one in sales forum. Other then that I am running out of options
Anyone know of anything else out there?
