Ive got my FB project project that has a FC turbo brake conversion.. The car has been sitting for 5 years in storgae and im slowly putting it back together..

The brakes in the car i thought were FC turbo but they dont fit the braketry that comes with teh RE Speed kit and im thinking they are either FC NA or FD perhaps.. pics below.. Ive full rebuilt them also so would like to use them if i can..

As they dont appear to be FC turbo ive been thinking of easier option of doing away with the cable hand brake and possibly going a hydraulic hand brake.. Are these passable in a MOT test and legal - i would of course be looking for a lockable hand brake..

If anyone has one or knows if they will pass that would be good..

I\'m not aware of any difference with turbo or na in the UK, think these are FD calipers

The car will fail if you are unable to maintain the locking of 2 wheels by direct mechanical action:

so i rang 2 MOT stations in my close vacinity and told them of my caliper / hand brake cable issue and said ive installed a locking hydraulic hand brake - both asked if it was standard from factory and i said no its a after market thing and both agreed that as long as it operates in the same way and also locks both wheels the its MOT passable..

So i think might look for a lockable hand brake and see how it goes.. Can anyone recommend a lockable one??

Hmmm could you use a line lock valve? Ie you pull the normal hydro handbrake and then turn the line lock valve, it would then keep that pressure in the line, it works on normal brakes so I guess I don\'t see it being an issue with a hydro hand brake as its doing the same thing lol probably a cheaper option if you already have a standard hydro.

So are you saying that a lockable hydro brake wont hold pressure?

Prof

No i think he was just saying it may be cheaper.

Although I am pretty sure an electrically operated linelock would not be allowed, so it would have to be a mechanically operated valve, as per that 2nd section on hand operated brakes.

I thought most hydraulic hand brake kits had a lock option, it\'s just not normally fitted by the drift boys, as they only want to upset the car momentarily.

i do have a brand new B&M line locker an old project i could use but i usually plumb them back wards so i can do power skids :)

I am leaning towards something like this i think..

yes thats the one.. The one that you have there with the simple leaver could also work and i guess be hidden in the centre console or something..

hmmm what to do - only concern i have if i go a full lever is the whole dash and interior bits have been flocked and i would like to cut it up to put a hydro brake where the centre consol is..

interesting, i had a passatt and the handbrake worked on a button, always wondered what would happen if the battery went flat with the handbrake on!

On the Passat if the battery goes flat with the handbrake on then the handbrake stays on, I think you energise a relay to get it off so if the battery power fails then the battery comes on.  But as soon as you put a jump start across the battery you can take it off again.  It happened to my dad\'s Passat when he left the boot open overnight.

Apparently putting details of your car spec in your signature means the nice folks on exile-rotorsport think you\'re a fool.  I can think of no higher compliment!
