Hi,
Finally getting some time to look at my EGI after major cooling issues of last year. Went to start it the other day and car starts but dies straight away. Noticed that if I held key in start position it stayed on fine (still have cooling problems to resolve though).
Would this problem be with the ignition switch?

Thanks
Mark

Isn\'t start position with the starter running? (I\'m tired so might be being thick)

Does it run at all, or just fire up and die immediately?

Could be the immobilizer playing up?  (It was fitted about 10 years back IIRC!)

If I dont hold the key as if I was trying to start it, the car starts and then just shuts down.

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks

Check for air leaks in the long rubber tube leading to the intake, any air leaks or splits will cause the car to not run properly or indeed not fire up at all, does the car try and keep running if you blip the throttle and keep the throttle on a bit or does the throttle make no difference?

MrHanky

Will do Mitch. Throttle does not make any difference. When I had to move it, I ended up holding key as if starting it up whilst I reversed up drive. Then when I was ready to switch off I just let go of the key.

Thanks again

Hmm that is odd, I would still check the hoses though to rule them out, surely with the key in the \'start\' position the starter motor will be constantly running? If its not it might be an issue with the wiring to the key perhaps or a bad earth somewhere?

Brett

Check the simple stuff - any obviously loose connectors or damaged cables - any obvious splits in the airlines etc.

This would be true is the rx7 used a maf.

It used an AFM which is also a device dedicated to the metering of air...

But in any case, the symptoms he describes suggeest the issue is not with the air metering circuit.

Not sure how the EGI is wired, but this could be some issue with the main relay power circuits.  On the TII the ignition switch fires the main relay in both the ignition and start positions, if it\'s not staying energised when left in the ignition position, then it could be either the switch or relay.
