Hi guys, im looking into buying an rx7 and ive heard they need rebuilding quite often? Just wandering how many miles between each rebuild, what the cost usually is if i took it to a garage, and is it just the apex seals that you replace? Just trying to get a better idea as to what im getting myself in to lol. Cheers, tim

One piece of Advice mate, do it once and do it right! Please ignore those people who would suggest that "you can perform a rebuild yourself", because I partly agree with them. Oh this is coming from a guy who has already encountered 4 13b rebuilds and 2 20b rebuilds-sadly :(

A rebuild by a good reputable garages like Powergains, Hayward Rotary, Oldone, WGT would guarantee your FD\'s engine reliability.

cheers

Welcome to the club.
First off if you\'re looking to get an FD buy the best you can afford. Thats not the one with the most after market parts that look amazing but has a crap engine. Use your head and not heart and you\'ll do ok.
Find a car with a recent rebuild with receipts. That doesn\'t garrente the engine will last forever but it should give you some peace of mind.
You have to remember that some FDs are now over 20 years old and as such a lot of bits on them will be well passed their best. There are good cars out there, but there are bad as well.
Have a good look around and see what comes up. Try to go and see as many as you can and that way you\'ll get an idea of whats what
If looked after well an engine can last a lot longer than many believe

Try to find one that needs a rebuild. In this case you should pick one up for less than 2k
When we picked up Aaron\'s new car knowing it was stuffed it came already converted to single turbo. (the turbo survived the broken tip) the car was recently resprayed and have a few trick bits on there. We got the car for 2k and managed to still drive it from Bournemouth to Hayward rotary.
So from this you will have a car with a 30 month warrantee and will be covered for track , drag and even det.
You will be able to drive as hard as you like with no worries

There are plenty of cars out there for sale but unless it\'s out of warrantee then it\'s always a gamble.
I can recommend giving Carl Hayward a call I have been customer of his for 7 years now and never had any issues.
There are a lot of builders out there but just remember you do get what you pay for

Thanks for the replys guys. I havnt got the money at the moment, but im saving.
Im not too fussed on engine condition, im a mechanic myself but ive never worked on a rotary engine. However i do live about 5mins from dragon performance in devon.
I\'d really like a series 8 fd, but it all depends on funds at the time.

If you have never worked on a rotary engine then I highly recommend that someone with  experience looks after your engine.
Good luck anyway and my advice is never just go to a tuner because there local.
