Hello,

I\'ve just bought a SSC Stylus kit car with a turbo rx-7 engine installed in it. I\'m afraid I didn\'t build it but will be maintaining it from here on in.

This is my first rotary engined car and I really love the engine\'s characteristics. I\'m hoping that I don\'t ask too many stupid questions and will try to make as much use of the search facility as I can.

I have the description of the engine components at home but I\'ll post them up later on. My first question will probably be how all these bits fit together, where they come from and so on. From memory it\'s a series II turbo engine with a series 5 block... if that makes no sense I\'ll be updating this from the information from the advert a bit later ;)

Quick picture...

Hopefully I can get up to speed with these engines sooner rather than later and will hopefully start to contribute rather than just constantly ask questions ;)

All the best,

Mark

Hi and welcome to the club, the previous owner of that car is on here somewhere.
There are performance cars and then there is the RX-7...........

12.3 second 1/4 mile, terminal speed of 122mph (1st ever drag run on a TO4R)

engine built by....... umm me! now powered by a T51 Kai......

Tony? I imagined he would be. He\'s done an amazing job building this car.

You\'ve bought a proper monster of a car. It got rebuilt not that long ago and should be as tight as a nut.

Tony will be around at some point !

It\'s definitely got some go, that\'s for sure.

I\'m trying not to bother Tony too much. I\'ve asked him a few questions but don\'t want to ask too many ;)

In an effort to understanding more about the rotary engine do you mind if I ask a few questions? If this isn\'t the place for this then please point me to the right part of the forum.

The specification of the engine is as follows (reproduced from the advert)...

"I rebuilt the car using a Rotary Engine from the Rx7 turbo II."  ... "Late Model Series 5 engine block from a low mileage import with a larger rear plate which is stronger around the dowels. It was Rebuilt under a 1000 miles ago with Atkins Rotary Cryogenically treated Apex seals and Corner seals, Mazda Side seals and all springs, seals and gaskets. There is a sump baffle plate fitted and the engine has a mild street port."

Firstly, I\'ve found this picture of a rotary engine in bits...

I\'m familiar with piston engines but this is obviously completely different. Having had a look at a few animations I get how the engine works and I can identify the rotary housings and the rotors but what are the rest of the bits called?

Which bits are the block and the end plate mentioned in the advert? I\'m guessing they\'re the two end pieces... is that right? Which is which?

What\'s the centre bit called? Is what I see as a crank called a crank? What are the dowels? Are they the rods that hold the whole thing together?

The ad mentions a turbo II engine. Is this the engine from an 87-88 FC car?

The series 5 end plate and block... is this also from an FC car but from the years 89-92?

On the outside of the engine I can see that the intake manifold is the black painted bit on top of the engine...

This seems to go from the throttle body to the engine intake. Given that there are two rotors does each rotor have one intake port and one exhaust port? If so is the intake manifold a 4 in to 2 type design? Can anyone point me in the direction of some information as to why it\'s designed like this?

I\'ve found the spark plugs (seems to be two per rotor) but where do the injectors live? The ad says "The car is running 550cc primary injectors and 1000cc secondary injectors"... how many injectors do I have and why primary and secondary injectors?

Sorry for all the newb questions. There\'s nothing I need to any of this as it\'s in really good order. I just like to know as much as possible about what I\'m driving.

Actually, reading back, that\'s a :censored::censored::censored::censored:-load of questions... please feel free to ignore any too dense for a reply. Reminds me of a story my mate told me about his first day at the steel works... He wandered up to his supervisor who was talking to a mate about some aspect of work and stands there listening. Eventually his supervisor turns to him and asks what he wants. "Nothing" says my mate "I\'m just interested". Supervisor replies... "Your interest has been noted... now :censored::censored::censored::censored: off" ;)

All the best,

The picture you have is from the n/a fc (egi non turbo, essentially the same so don\'t worry!). The rear plate is on the back left of the picture.

The eccentric shaft is equivalent to the crank. The two lobes it has are what the rotors sit on.

Dowels you got right, they are the long bolts that go through the 3 plates, 2 housings and the front cover.

The engine is from a series five fc so I think that\'s 88-91.   I don\'t know about the larger rear plate and could only guess, so I won\'t!! ;)

The black bit on top is known as the upper inlet manifold (UIM) which connects to the lower inlet manifold (LIM)

Looks like a cracking car to drive though, I\'m not jealous!! ;)

Ada7

You get 4 injectors, 2 primary and 2 secondary

Tony is a great guy and im sure he\'d have no problem helping you out with anthing about this car.
Welcome to the rotary world, you\'re going to love it :D

Nice one, thanks for all the info. I\'m a bit obsessive about wanting to know everything I can about what I drive for fun. I love playing about with the oily bits every bit as much as driving the cars which is a hell of a lot. The only thing I really can\'t be bothered with is cleaning and polishing... I normally rely on the rain to clean my cars for me ;)

Tony is a great guy and a brilliant bloke to buy a car from... really helpful.

All the best,

Mark

PS. I\'ll cough up the money and join the club this weekend. Don\'t want to be a free loader :)

Hi Mark.
Some of the later series 5 engines had more metal around the top dowel point just by the oil filter.  The earlier ones could crack when running more power.  The later FD engines all had the stronger block.  I think Prof on here cracked his rear plate. The stronger rear plates are quite rare. The engine is from a 1989 - 92 car which in this country were called turbo II.
The engine has 2 inlet ports per chamber(rotor) and one exhaust port. The manifold feeds air into each inlet,  the 2 smaller ones are called the primaries and have the standard 550cc injectors, the secondary which are bigger ports have the 2 secondary injectors which are 1000cc.
I think the other questions have been answered but if there is anything else you need give me a call if you like.
400 BHP - 650 KG\'s = 616 BHP Per Ton of Rotary Power

That\'s the way to do it! :Thumbsup!

Nice one, thanks very much indeed (again) Tony.

Hmm, we are now a two wankel family having just bought my wife a 2005 RX-8... losing pistons by the day!
