My little gel battery has gone already and it is only 2 years old. Ive got a Ring trickle condition charger but do not use it every week.

It wont take much a charge now, shows up as fully charged but there is not enough to even turn the engine over.

Is there a way of completely shorting these out and then fully charging again?

It is probably dead but as a Varley is only a normal lead acid battery just sealed, there\'s no reason not to take it to your local garage and ask them to zap it on a starter boost then give it a high charge for half an hour to see if it will kick back into life,

Nothing to loose is the moto here.

Thanks Clive, I\'ll try it. As you say nothing to loose.

Been through a few of these over the last 4 years and, in my experience, once they\'re dead they\'re dead.

The only way to keep them alive is charge regularly, very regularly in winter if there\'s any load on the battery when the car is off or, if the car\'s secure... disconnect the battery.

That\'s the option I go with now but no use if you need it alarmed!

Hi Ian

Good to hear from you.

Ive tried some boost charge on it and an overnight trickle but its holding very limited charge and not enough to turn over the motor.

I let the alarm drain it in the winter when I forget to keep the charger on and it killed it off :Hammer

So time to get the wallet out again

I\'ve moved from the Varley to Odessey:

Still suffer from the same problem if fully discharged though :(

Hi Ian

Looks interesting but is the 22 size ok? I have been using the Red Top 30 which is a 25AH.

i\'ve had three of these red top 30s, over about 6 years. they don\'t last. i\'ve switched back to a larger battery and stuck it in the boot now, no probs since.
