my FD runs very rich and when its sat at idle the smell is very strong! there doesnt seem to be any fuel leak so im not worried about that, but i am only getting about 12mpg and thats not driving it hard!

anything i can check or do to try and help?

Exhaust leak is the first placed id look, especially if its running stock ecu and o2 sensor, they are very sensitive to air leaks.

also check map pipe hasnt broken or fallen off.

take it to a tuner and get it checked out mate mines a big single and i get 16 mpg somethings not right there

Mine is doing exactly the same, Mick at Hurley discovered the air bleed screw?, was fully open not helping matters, has mostly solved it for now but can\'t comment on the economy as I\'d had a split in the rats nest for a while, so now that\'s fixed I been flat out everywhere this last week enjoying the boost!!

Check your ECU codes for any sensors not working. Mine was running extremely rich to the point where it would flood, cut out and not start again without a new set of plugs. This was happening on a regular basis.
Had a faulty coolant thermosensor, air intake thermosensor, and TPS needed adjusting. All of which affect the fuel trim.

can any garage read the ECU codes? or do i need to visit a mazda specialist?

exhaust does seem to be blowing a little from towards the front of the car, but how much effect can this have?

ive just used the £40 i put in last week and got about 70miles which equates to 10mpg, and only maybe 3 time did i drive it hard, but only for about 1/2 a mile each time, i cant afford to run it at those costs!

ok so ive seen how to read the codes, flashing light in the dash with connecting two pins in the diagnostic connector so i can do this, however is it the same on imports as uk models?

K7RXX

The imports dont flash on the dash I think, this is how I do it:

Bridge connections TEN - GND with a wire
Then use a wired bulb and bridge FEN - B+
Turn the ignition to on and the bulb will flash codes at you
If no codes are stored it will just give one flash and not repeat, if codes are stored they will cycle.
List of error codes here:

thank you very much for that! i will have a go later, just one more thing

"If no codes are stored it will just give one flash and not repeat, if codes are stored they will cycle."

can you explain that again? when i turn the ignition on it will flash, these flashes indicate a number which relates to an issue, whats the case if they are stored or not? and by cycle do you mean indicate all error codes, then go back over them again?

Id fix this first mate,if it has a blow it will cause real flooding/fuelling issues as the ecu reads more o2 it throws more fuel into the engine thin king its running lean causing the symptoms youve experienced.

and it can lead you down the path replacing sensors/switches etc.

one of my own cars has a leaking second turbo and its horrifically rich to a point it it doesnt want to start on stock ecu

ok ill get under and get the exhaust fixed this week, i dont think its a huge issue as it starts first time everytime regardless of the temperature, probably just a gasket!

It wont use the o2 for start up so may not be that evident, mine was only bad because it ran so rich it was washing the housings down making it not want to start,
