Hey all,
first post here but a fair few questions to ask. I managed to get my hands on a fc in the end of September which was quite a find. Its n/a 13b I think with 43k on the clock one owner from knew. I have been wondering which way to go with  the engine, as in boost or a charger. Tho now i feel like being a bit different and go for carbs, I have heard insane ideas of using bike carbs ?. Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge on this, or if somebody can point me in the right direction as I have found nothing online as far as research goes.
Cheers !!

The stock EFI system on the FC will give you more power then carbs hence why you wont find any/little information on people doing it.

Hi Kyle,

Over the course of my ownership of my 2 EGIs I have spent ages looking into various power options with a views that if I ever have some money I might be able to upgrade my car (this still hasn\'t happened yet unfortunately).

Anyway I have looked down the supercharger route and this was looking expensive unless you happen to be a decent mechanic who can do this sort of thing yourself.  So far as I could tell there are no kits available for the 13b with the exception of a Paxton (IIRC) sold in the states which by all accounts seems to suck power from your car or give you very minimal gains).

As for carbing I also looked at this and if you search for threads started by me you should find one about this which Rotorheid talks a lot in (he uses an EGI with a Weber 48 or 51 IDA on for hill climbs).  I do believe you can make gains with one of these on.

I still have my 2 cars and at the minute I am pulling the engine from one of them for possible future use.
Again if I ever get spare money I would ideally like to rebuild this engine, port it in the process with either a Bridge or Peripheral Port and in a perfect world would like to go the route of ITB\'s for that extra power and awesome sound.

You can find loads of info on Ausrotary and RX7club for this sort of thing.

I did happen to search on application of bikecarbs on the 13b just a few days ago and unless you know a tried and tested carb with regards to jetting etc then you could spend a hell of a lot of time trying to set the damn things up on the 13b (from what I have read and from no experience of my own).  If you are going to carb then use the Weber or Dellorto 48.  Both have a lot of info out there with regards to jetting etc, as well as suitable manifolds which can be bought of the shelf.

Oh one thing to think about with whatever you do is to think about what you want to use the car for?  I really enjoy tracking mine and have also done some grass autotests.  If I want to continue to track the car a PP would most likely stop me from going to a lot of tracks as the noise from the car would be too much.

Good luck anyway.

Cheers Mark,
I am just looking for a way to add a bit of performance but to be slightly different. All my friends have turbos and chargers, I thought this was a cool was to increase performance but to have a "old school" feel about the fc. Its just the enjoyment factor and the appeal of being different from my friends which makes me think carbs. I had a boosted civic a few yrs back and really do not fancy going turbo again. I have a friend from norway who seems to think that the right carb setup can out perform a standard turbo 2 model. Which started in interest in this sort of direction. Will have to check out your posts and I will keep you updated on what I find/ how I get on.
cheers buddy !!

Check out the \'old school motors and parts\' there are some 13b carbs that come up that fitted on the 13bs that went into the 1st gens, you can also get 13B carb manifolds mainly for the Weber DCOE40s, a carbed engine won\'t outperform a standard turbo II unless its heavily ported - ie peripheral ported, if the engine is carbed and PPed then yes it would outperform the heavily restricted stock turbo II, until they increase the boost by 0.3bar and the power levels are he same lol

If you are thinking of tracking the car then NA is a good option as you would have no lag, don\'t forget that you will have high compression rotors in there, so keeping NA would be the cheaper option!

P.S. welcome to the club :D

Actually a stock engine block FC non turbo will run more power on a carb than its stock injection.
180hp can be acheived flywheel on a side draught 48 Dellorto carb that sits on top of the engine, this has to be coupled with headers and free flow exhaust but it does make a big difference over injection.
The stock car runs 148 flywheel hp with its stock injection and the later hi compression egi\'s from 89 on run 165hp.
Hope that helps.

Carl

Spot on Carl. I looked at that combo a while back. I know of a rx3 sedan running that set up and it flys.

Thanks for all the info and such a warm welcome. As i am just throwing ideas up in the air what do you all think about a v8 from a lexus soarer or is400 ?. There are two reasons im put off. One being I would like to keep the rotary if I could, my 13b has only 43k on the clock. The car itself is such a clean example. Cleanest arches I have ever seen on a jap car and has only been in the rain twice in its life (once was when I owned it). The second reason would be custom mounts, custom prop shaft and probably many more parts I havent thought of yet. There is no time limit set on this or cost budget if I chose this route as I live by myself so the money would just come out of my drinking kitty which has been quite large for some time now !!

Your second reason nails it really. Plus insurance hassles etc. I personally would stick with the 13b and get as much info and help from this site.

I have also been advised on throttle bodies, has anyone had any experience with this ?

I think your right Bryan, v8 would be great but completion I would be looking at around 2 yrs without cutting corners. That doesnt bother me, however I do not want to bite off more than I can chew

Hi Kyle,

Again no experience but have a look on Ausrotary for tweakit ITBs.
I have seen a few threads with people using them over there.
Heres a link to the tweakit site where they have a lot of rotary stuff

Thanks mark, There is some great info there !!. A Friend has informed me that in the u.s they already make brackets to fit a v8. As im willing to plow 3k ish into this I am really not sure which way to go now !

Skifledanabit

stick with the 13b, V8\'s go against the entire ethos of the RX7, lightweight, nimble and high revving. stick the carbs on there, port the engine a bit, stick some good brakes/suspension etc on and you\'ll be laughing.

Although, if you do decide on the V8 route... I\'ll take the engine off your hands :D
