Can you belive it, a week before Christmas our Huge German Shepperd goes out side into the back garden, i let her in 20 mins later too find half her back toe is missing and Bleading every where, best bit was she was not bothered, just wanted some food leaving pudles of blood all over the show (looks like some ones been shot). So big panic checks in the garden for her toe (no trace of it) takes her upto the Vets who are closed and have to get them out of bed :( so just had a phone call to say they did there best but had to remove the digit.... Thats £700 please :( Just rang our Pet insurance (the super 24 hour line) and there is no one there just get a message "we will be shut for Christmas from the 16th of December" :( Just what i need a week before.....

I\'d love to know what happened, it would be a daring cat to have a go at her?? Must have been a Fox or Badger?? But she is more Curious than Viscous so thats probably why she didn\'t come in with half a dead cat or some thing.

Dude thats not good before christmas, i feel your pan man!

Grant Monkhouse

Possibly a badger. They\'re really viscous and strong animals. A fox would have run away, they run away from my sheep dog and he\'s a lot smaller than your dog.

Main thing is though is the dog ok? Insurance is a great thing though.

Always happens at the worst possible time.  Did it actually take the toe off or just rip the claw straight out?

Tbh it was nasty, the toe was missing from the last joint and all the skin was just flapping about and of course there was loads of mud and grass in it. Was a Double take moment.

Any way she\'s back home now and apart from being very Groggy and wanting to be carried every where she seems fine which is Good :) , she has an Appointment to go back on Saturday to have the dressings changed so i\'ll see exactly how much they have removed then but its the inner back toe so with a bit of luck won\'t affect her too much.

I know it sounds soft but i just hope loosing the toe doesn\'t affect her running about etc as she acts like a puppy :)

I\'m sure she will be fine bud, animals cope much better with these things than we do!

Yeh thats what the vet said too, i\'ll just keep her topped up on Pain meds and pamper her :)

At least she\'s OK now and hopefully your insurance will pay up and not try to get out of it because you didn\'t pre-authorise!

I had a similar situation with my car years ago - got broken into on Christmas Eve and they smashed a window. So I had to get that sorted to secure the car and be able to drive it - insurance closed for Christmas. So my Mazda dealer (who I brought the car and the insurance from) sorted it out and then the insurance said they weren\'t going to pay up because I didn\'t get it authorised and didn\'t use one of their approved dealers! :2Mad

So now I check they have 24/7 claims and I can get anything done at my dealer.

That had crossed my mind and they where called no route but no one picked up, but it does say on the Insurance policy it covers Accident / emergency Treatment but i used to do allot of work for a Car Insurance company and know how slippery they can be when THERE money is involved. I did chat to the vet about this as he was adding a few zero\'s to the bill for getting him out of bed, he seemed to think as long as every thing was documented with pics etc all the way he couldn\'t see a problem.... But i\'m not so sure, having a 24 hour call center then not being open is not a good sign.

Check through your policy documents.  My greyhound had a trip to an out of hours vets, any treatment etc was covered but the out of hours/emergency examination wasn\'t.  For me it wasn\'t worth making a claim as a £80 excess to claim back £100 off the bill for the treatment.

I would hope you will see back most of the money though.

i recently had to take my cat to the vet so i feel your pain...... emotionally and financially, thank goodess for pet insurance

Grizzly

Well out of interest i rang another Surgery and they said to remove a digit is a £500 opp if booked in so i suppose if they did try and clean it up etc first plus X ray and out of hours etc it may not be that Excessive.

Plus on a brighter note i\'ve just moved some money about and am more flush than i though i was (Christmas Bonus has never sounded so good)so its no biggie if its not covered but some one will get an ear full :)

AMH

It doesn\'t sound like you had any other options so fingers crossed - let us know how she\'s doing and how you get on with the insurance. Fingers crossed on both fronts.

will do, Looks like its going to be a long night she\'s like a big kid. She\'s slept all day and now she wants attention :(

Grizzly

The missus keeps pointing out that if that was me that just lost a toe i would be playing it for weeks (not too far off the truth ;) ) so the dog has on the couch perks at the minute :)
