Folks,

Just trying to clean up some of the bits on my Rex, wing vents, mirrors, etc. As they\'re not quite 100% :2Rolleyes

Following various bits of advice in the forums I\'m getting the hang of rattle can spraying... so far can put down a decent primer layer, and get the paint nice and even with no runs and so on. Clearcoat is OK, but I need more practice there. [OK, I know I should bite the bullet and get the proper gear... eventually!]

My biggest issue however is trying to get a perfect match on the colour. All the variations I have tried seem to come up a shade darker. OK, my search for paint hasn\'t gone too far afied... my local Halfords :)
The mix on demand paint they have for SilverStone (3G) is a shade darker.
I got them to mix another Mazda silver metallic (I forget the code) which was in their "big book of samples", which is closer, but still not quite right.
Finally I tried Peugot Silver metallic (suggested by an SilverStone owning MX-5er), which is close, but still not quite right :(

What am I doing wrong (other than going to Halfords!)? Any suggestions on how to achieve a good colour match/source of SilverStone paint that really *IS* SilverStone coloured very gratefully received.

Thanks,
Dan.

[I\'m sure the paint fumes are not doing me any good :Giggle ]

Since Silver Stone was one of the colours on the UK sold FD\'s, you may want to try Mazda directly? Might be expensive, but it may be closer? Just a thought! I had a Silver Stone coloured FD years ago which had had the front bumper re-sprayed before I bought it, and that looked darker than the body work paint. So the problem isn\'t a recent issue!

on this note.. i\'ve just resprayed my front bib, and found ford moondust (or moonstone?) silver is exactly the same colour as mazda 3L..

ford and mazda were pretty closely tied in the 90\'s (fiesta/3 series).. is there a possibility u\'ll find a good match with a ford silver like i did?

DrDan

Sounds like a good plan :)

I\'ll give that a go next, unless I can find a decent local source of colour matched paint.

Thanks,
Dan.

Iv\'e got several cans of Silverstone metalic (for Mazda) to do a few bits on the car by Hycote double acrilic, don\'t know what that means, hoping to do my front bib this weekend, done it before with a Merc silver, not too bad for a match but hoping the Hycote will be better, it\'s the larger things like spoiler skirts that are more difficult to get an even coat on with cans, i do warm the cans  up in warm water (just a bit!) to try and increase the pressure in the hope that will help, bit dodgy i know!

Reviving an old thread here (sorry if this is bad etiquette) but I\'m looking for paint to touch up my mirrors (paint is coming off) on my silver stone RX-7 and was wondering how you got on with colour match?

Ahhhh... this brings back fond memories of my silver FD :Giggle

In the end I found the best match to be from Paints4U: http://www.paints4u.com/ ; I simply ordered the "Silver Stone" 3L spray can.

Still not quite 100%, but so close no one could tell unless they looked really hard or I pointed it out.

PS Ooops just realised in my first post I said the paintcode is 3G ... that\'s the paintcode for "Shadow Silver", clearly not right, it is definitely 3L!!!

Thanks a lot Dr Dan, I have dodgy mirror paint that is doing my head in and I would like to give spraying them a go myself.

I know the feeling - that\'s what drove me bonkers - sufficiently for me to remove them from the car, sand them back, prime and paint them. I think three or four times before I was more or less happy with the final finish...

I\'m sure a professional would have got it right first time, but I was determined to give it a go myself, but really should know better as I\'m not happy unless the finish is good :)

Happy to help,
DrDan.

Paint is a nightmare to match - even offical Mazda colours.

When I first got my old strato RX-8 I had to get the bonnet resprayed and the first attempt (by Mazda) was awful. People could spot it staightaway. Eventually they had to get the \'Mazda paint expert\' down and remixed it (with some additional mica if I remember) and then they still had to spray over the wings to blend it in.

I\'ve also got a photo from my first Prodrive day with half a dozen new velocity red RX-8s - all different shades! :eek
