You say hard to start when warm. Is this like when you fill it up with petrol its hard to start after? Or if you leave it for like half an hour its hard to start? or both?

if it is low compression I wouldn\'t worry too much, EGi\'s can run for ages with low compression before going bang

The EGI engines never really go \'bang\' they just have less and less power, turboed rotaries on the other hand make expensive noises, usually just after its put out loads of noise from the exhaust :D

WHOAAA!!!! Ah, i\'m glad to see that all the pops, bangs over fuelling etc aren\'t just mine.

Nope, the EGI\'s seem to be worse for the bangs and flames than the turbo\'s perhaps as the turbocharged cars burn the fuel quicker? Its nothing to worry about, plus its generally viewed as cool (by me).

How many miles has it done?
Any history of a rebuild?

Okay, back on topic.

My EGI is on 93k miles with no indication of a rebuild in it\'s history.

Chuff test shows even compression, starts fine usually when cold sometimes needs some help with the fuse, doesn\'t like starting hot very much either.

Has the same backfiring symptoms as yours, as do two other EGI\'s (Kamatari\'s and Skifles\')

EGI\'s do, by nature, run excessively rich in comparison to the Turbo-II, Brett can probably tell you why, as I have no idea. Running rich not only means they use plenty of fuel (I personally tend to expect an average of 16mpg from mine) but running rich means it WILL backfire an awful lod, especially letting off under load, and as Ben said, will likely spit flames at high RPM gear changes.

If you\'re worried about a misfire, try the following.

Check all your plugs - are they dirty? Do they spark? Do they need replacing?

Check your HT leads - are they brittle? Worn? Are they carrying current to the plugs?

Spark plugs wear with age and if you don\'t know how long they\'ve been in the car, it might be an idea to change them anyway to eliminate the plugs from the equation as a possible cause of the problem (that\'s what I did at least, and would recommend doing if you don\'t know the state or age of the current plugs)

People often argue in the EGI that either NGK9\'s or NGK10\'s are better, it all depends on who you ask and what you feel like putting in it, I use 9\'s, others have 10\'s.

I\'m guessing EGi\'s run rich simply because it\'s a direct route from the housing out the exhaust, whereas the turbo model\'s exhaust has to go back through the turbo, therefore the excess fuel gets dissipated by the turbo, therefore no pops and bangs.

The hot starting issue could be knackered injectors and a worn engine, hence asking about cars history :)
