Few days ago driving on A6 in 5th 6000 rev, sudden lost of power and got the car towed back home.
Today I did a compression test. Rear rotor lost compression.... :(

No sign of tip failure at all before, always started hot or cold first time, I thot the engine is healthy... :2Rolleyes

Due to me moving to MEng I cannot afford to spend more time on it, it had been on the axle stand for 3 months getting all foot work and other things surrounding the engine sorted for the car. At the end the engine let me down.... :(

So I will be breaking the car when I\'m back from summer job. Should i get a S2000 or RX8 for my next car? I\'m looking for reliability as this is my only car and i really have to get to lectures next year XD

Feel sad to leave the FC section here. You guys were so nice and helpful here, Thanks for the help through out my 14months of ownership of this car :)

Erm reliability... remind me what has just blown up ?

What does your car share with an RX8 ?

There is a reason (well several) why RX8\'s are cheap and they are all to do with the engine.

B.Martin

A well maintained one should be reliable though, in theory lol.

grinder

you not just fancy dropping in another engine ?

how much are you looking for the car in its current state ?

Thanks guys :)

Wont be dropping another engine as if im rebuilding this to the spec i want, it will cost around 4k. I will be breaking my car and im happy to take offer for the whole car. It\'s just the rear rotor blown and surprisingly didnt hear the scratching sound at all. can upload the video of it doing the compression test if anyone interested. Spec list is in the for sale section :)

The thing is I will be going to Hong Kong for my summer job for 2 months and back in Oct >< so wont be available for breaking till then but WILL BE available anytime to be towed away if anyone wants this car and put a new engine in it.

btw quoted from wiki

The engine entailed two major changes. First, the exhausts ports are no longer peripheral but are located on the side of the housing, which allowed engineers to eliminate overlap and redesign the intake port area. This produced noticeably more power, thanks to a better compression ratio. Second, the rotors are shaped differently, especially their side seals and low-height apex seals, which offer optimized lubrication.
These and other innovative technologies allow the Renesis to achieve 49% higher output and dramatically reduced fuel consumption and emissions (the RX-8 meets LEV-II). It won International Engine of the Year and Best New Engine awards 2003 and also holds the "2.5 to 3 liter" (note that the engine itself is 1.3 liter) size award for 2003 and 2004, where it is considered a 2.6 L engine.[3][4] Finally, it was on the Ward\'s 10 Best Engines list for 2004 and 2005.

So it is quite different. being new and non turbo hopefully it will last me through my other 3 years of masters and placement :p

I don\'t look at the RX8 as an unreliable car :)

I think there are a few things that tend to \'go\' so if you replace them, you\'ll have a good time :p

dthebuk

Rx8\'s are big bucks to run and maintain (tax is £400 a year i think?) and the engines do tend to go pop, and not in a cheap way. However, low milage ones are pretty darn cheap. TBH if you\'re want a sporty car i suggest you rebuild the fc instead. You know the car and whats likely to go wrong, the chances of you getting a banger of an rx8 are fairly high, specially as owners don\'t always tend to be rotary enthusiasts. Additionally you\'ll have a nice new engine in a sweet car

Its still a rotary, it still drinks too much petrol and is massively less reliable than a piston engine.

I just sold my wife\'s Audi with 170k on it still on original engine and turbo - how many Rotaries can do that ?

Rotaries have some advantages but running costs and reliability aren\'t in that list.

Pre=March 2006 RX8s are £260 a year tax.  A well maintained one is very reliable, do a thorough test drive and get a compression test before buying, and there are plenty lasting 100k + on original engines.  By that age it\'ll probably be on its 4th Catalytic converter if the owner hasn\'t decatted it and is keeping a spare cat for the MOT!

Apparently putting details of your car spec in your signature means the nice folks on exile-rotorsport think you\'re a fool.  I can think of no higher compliment!
