Hi everyone, well this is my first post and straight in at the deep end!

I\'m looking at buying a 1993 JDM Type R in CYM, the car needs work but is all there so to speak. What i\'m wondering is does anyone know how many cym\'s were built in Japan, i\'ve found out 350 were imported into the USA but that\'s all the info i have so far. Were they a limited run in Japan too?

I\'ll post pics if the deal comes off!

Thanks for any help in advance.

Its the paint colour the "competition yellow mica". i was under the impression its a rare colour from the factory. The car is listed as a Type R "Special Edition" on the drivers door label.

I dont think they used that.colour after 1992 thus making them a bit rare. But Type R\' s are pretty common and not special despite the mazda marking. Cant tell you numbers but if thats the original colour, it will be sometime before you bump into another fd in competition yellow.

This link has some info on it. No numbers though, but does state CYM as being one of the 5 original colours offered on the FD, but was then discontinued during \'93.

As I recall, CYM was a US only colour. There were other yellow JDM cars but they\'re just straight yellow, not the mica of the US model. It\'s been a looooong time since I looked at this stuff though...

edited to add.... The "special edition" on the door sticker is just a header or title for that section of the sticker. It\'s only a special edition if there are letters printed underneath "special edition".

I\'m pretty sure CYM was indeed a JDM colour, the only other yellow I can think of is Sunburst Yellow, which was exclusive to the RS-R that was released in October 1997.  If it\'s a factory yellow, I think they are the only options.

In the US CYM was only available on the Type R-1 (Montego Blue Mica and Silver Stone Metallic were not available for this car, so it was only red, black or yellow!).

I think CYM was discontinued upon the release of the Series 2 FD (August 1993) where it was replaced with Chaste White.  Also, I\'m pretty sure that CYM was not offered to European customers - I know it was not in the UK model\'s colour list.

I\'m surprised only 350 made it to the USA, in total around 12,500 Series 1 FDs were exported to countries other than Japan, the majority of those going to the USA.  Then again, I recall the Type R-1 got some stick from press over there on account of its overly hard suspension (something that was rectified in the R-2 version of 1994) so maybe the number\'s correct.  In any case, I\'d say CYM is one of the rarest colours you\'ll find an FD in.  Perhaps the most rare if you discount Sunburst Yellow and other special edition colours such as Snow White Pearl Mica and Titanium Grey Metallic.

Fair enough.

Alex, If the door sticker\'s still intact then there should be a paint colour code on there. What does that say?

Thanks guys!

The door sticker is intact and sure enough its the J9 CYM colour :Thumbs-up

I have seen the official mazda import paperwork for the usa and again it confirms only 350 in this colour imported to the states, but i  guess other than the production lifespan it was not a ltd run in japan. The car has twin oil coolers, the suede/alcantara seats in the front and a front strut brace (mazda oem), other than that it has several jdm tuning/styling parts like re-amemiya, and feed items such as 300kph feed clocks and feed wheels in body colour.

Heres a couple of pic of the car as i got it. It has been stood for 2 years and needs an engine build as comp is low even though it has only done 40\'000miles from new, but it will get rescued now and put back to its former glory :yes

There\'s a few parts here and there that are missing but nothing too major, although the Amemiya boot spoiler that came on it from Japan has been removed and the boot lid smoothed - not my thing but working on finding a new spoiler to go back on to match with the Amemiya bodykit.
