Hey guys. I did start this question in another thread but realised I was hijacking an insurance thread and realised not everyone with the know how might be reading that thread so though I would create a new thread in here with specific to the FD3 series of people of might be able to help.

Basically I am trying to work out exactly what model my Jap Import 1992 RX7 FD3 is. I was told this info would be on the vin plate in the drivers door shut but there is no such plate located here. Even the original tyre pressure sticker has been painted over during the re-spray lol. There is a plate under the bonnet on the drivers side seen below if this gives anyone any indication? I was told it is likely to be the Efini model and that is what the E could indicate in the E-FD3 S. But thinking about it I thought the Efini was a limited edition type thing. And was a type R. Surely the S could indicated its a type S? Does that even exist? I really dont know lol.

And here is that number hidden by the cable in the above pic in case that is of any help to identify model:-

The reason I would really like to know is my insurance company asked me what model it is and I said I didnt know and so they just put it down as a type RS but I have been recently told that this is unlikely as they are rare as hens teeth and the most exspensive to insure even after being told by my insurance company that the model makes no difference to the price. But I was sure it would. So I would really like to find out for certain what model it is so I can enlighten my insurance company.

If you need any other information to help me determine exactly what model it is please by all means ask and I will try to give you all the information you need.

(If only it was as simply as typing in the chassis number somewhere lol)

I have a 94 efini jap import type r, the plate in the pick is the exact same E-FD3S.

I know type-r has twin oil coolers but not sure if any other models carry this

Mmm, mines efini and has that same plate as well.  I hadnt thought of the oil coolers, this might be something to check...

From your other post carl:

Off the top of my head, i have everything you named on mine (Car is located on my missus\'s front garden, and im at my parents for the weekend)

Do you still have the stock Fauc-Suede buckets in yours?  I think i remember reading something about these seats being exclusive to the efini type-r in a \'92...

carlbrainiac

No I have red leather seats in the front now. Previous owner did it I think

carlbrainiac

btw being an idiot when it comes to car mechanicals where would I find the oil coolers and what would they look like?

Ada7

Look through the front bumper. the oil coolers are on either side (if you have 2) of the engine bay infront of the wheels (look like small radiators)

ahh yes I do have two small radiators in front of the wheels

Ada7

Then its most likely that you have a type R or better

Cool :-) But anyway you know of that I can find out exactly what model? And when you say type R or better. How many other models are there above the type R? Just thinking if there is a chance it could be a type RS then no point in calling the insurance company as they some how guess right lol

Eoiny555

What does it say in the v5 doc? I have mine down as type-r but this was specified when it was first registered in the uk

Dont know how else to find out if the plate on the driver door has been painted over?

FWIW, the top of the line at the time your car was built was actually the Type R, so congratulations!  A few months later (October, IIRC) the RZ was introduced which then became the range-topping FD.

However, there is no way it could be an RS as these weren\'t introduced until the 4th Series of FD, which was produced in March 1996.  There were many differences between the Type R and Type RS, as the RS was essentially the same as the RZ minus the BBS alloys and Recaro seats - it had the same upgraded brakes and suspension, the same final drive, even the same driver\'s knee pad and passenger footplate.

Whether this makes any difference to your insurance I don\'t know, but as the Type RS would be worth more (everything else being equal) it can\'t hurt to try!

One last thing, the name Efini doesn\'t denote a limited edition or special model, as such, but was the name Mazda Japan used for its sports models.  They basically split the company into 3 individual brands, one of the others was Eunos (you\'ve no doubt seen an MX-5 described as a Eunos Roadster) but I\'ve forgotten the name of the 3rd division.  I think the car was branded \'Mazda RX-7\' from 1996 onwards, but may be wrong there.  Anyway, if your car is badged Efini then you know for sure it\'s originally from Japan!
