VLADIVOSTOK, April 11 (Itar-Tass) - Twenty cars shipped from Japan were detained at Vladivostok port on Sunday because their background radiation level was exceeded. The press service of the territorial department of the Russian Federal Consumer Rights Protection and Human Health Control Service (Rospotrebnadzor) told Itar-Tass that the dangerous cargo was found during a search of the Asian Ice ship. Measurements have shown that background radiation is 1.5-2 times exceeded. The cars are currently in the customs control zone at a special site.

This is the first large shipment of radioactive second-hand cars from Japan. Only single cases of exceeding the background radiation level in them had earlier been recorded.

According to first deputy director general of OJSC Vladivostok Sea Commercial Port Mikhail Chizhmakov, the registered radiation background is only slightly above normal readings, however, Rospotrebnadzor bodies are to give their conclusion regarding safety of the cargo. The cars that do not meet the safety norms will most likely be shipped back to Japan.

1.5-2 x average background radiation will do you no harm what so ever. At about 10x you should start to worry.

For christsake your watch is far more radioactive and for that matter even more so the fire alarm in your house.

There\'s been so much scare mongering in the paper about radiation it\'s just silly. It\'s written by journalists who have absolutly no f***ing idea what they\'re talking about and they just want to peddle magazines papers or TV news stations, knowing full well that most of the public won\'t know any different.

Anyway I\'ll shutup now before I get all technical and ranty! :Grrr

If there\'s a pristine FD, so ship it to me please :Giggle

This fuss about radiation is all highly dubious bunkum.  All driven by the principles of ALARP.  If these cars have 1.5x the level of background radiation on them, that\'s probably a similar level of exposure as an X Ray.  Plus it\'ll all be surface contamination so you\'ll probably get rid of a lot of it with a good wash.

Apparently putting details of your car spec in your signature means the nice folks on exile-rotorsport think you\'re a fool.  I can think of no higher compliment!

Glow in the dark FD\'s are the cars to own these days. The so called FD3S Fukushima Edition.

If Aberdeen\'s town hall was for some reason turned into a reactor it would be condemed straight away as the granite it is made from excedes \'safe background levels\' for reactors due to granite being natually radioactive.

You can relax after a Radon bath :rollin

Harsh but bloody funny. I guess you only need to worry when mushroom clouds start to pop out the exhaust!

Lil-Steve

Rememeber all of our FD\'s were made in Hiroshima anyway, maybe they were all glow in the dark from the factory?
