:xconfusedWell them pics are big enough hehe sorry bout that dont know how they turned out small but deleted them off the camera now oops.

The top pic is the new thermo switch - basically a cheaper kenlow only £20.

The next 2 are how the rad sits in the engine bay.

Fourth is the newly moved coolant pipes.

Next my nice new MRC tax disc holder - my welcome pack arrived the other day & has already saved me £100 on my insurance remewal next month so £30 well spent i think.

The last pic is my newest spontaneous buy hehe £20 mega :rollin

While i have been changing the rad and fan i\'v tried not to change any of the origional mounts or pipes - just removed and added my own different bits incase a rad presents itself at the right price but didnt want to pay over £100 to get the old rad reconditioned or even more for a second hand one not as i only paid £400 for the car hehe.

Got the indicator working again i had just moved the contact hehe quick 2 min fix.
Cheers

Well The Duke got its first taste or york traffic yesterday and it doesnt like it lol sat for about half an hour had to switch off the engine as it was getting seriously hot dont think the fan is up to the job - but the coolant expansion tank lid doesnt clip into place very well and was off when i checked it just wondering if this is needed to fit correctly to keep the pressure up, i keep meaning to change it anyway as i\'v got a replacement sorted at work just keep forgetting to pick it up hehe :o

Apart from the traffic issues its running great on the bypass round york only gets about half way on the temp gauge - probably cos of the amount of air passing through the rad.

rotaries kick out a lot of heat Rob and take some cooling... plus if you cook one, they are very easy to damage.
I don\'t reckon your replacement rad is up to the job... looks narrow in the photos and the fan is only cooling a 1/2 to 2/3rds of the rad so once you lose airflow, stationary in traffic, your cooling is compromised.
My advice is to get a good second hand series 3 rad, buy a pair of electric fans from a MK1 Toyata MR2 and bolt them up. The fans will wire to your existing fan controller and the mr2 fans are a perfect fit for the s3 rad and you can get them off ebay for btw 15 & 30 quid.
They\'re a tried and tested mod, especially in the US and work great.... just fit and forget!

And the coolant expansion bottle doesn\'t form part of the pressurised circuit. It\'s there to catch the vented excess from the rad cap and allow it to be sucked back into the rad as it cools down and pressure drops.

So loose cap has no bearing except some liquid might jiggle out.

Yea i thought that was the case trying to source a good rad now if anyone has one may be able to get 1 for £50 quid but waiting for the guy to get back to me.

With the fan i\'v looked in the mr2 and its only the single fan on mine :Grrrso been looking on ebay and found a couple like this item no 310238638642 - sorry dont know how to put the link in hehe:Hammer would this be ok as i think it would look mega :D i know the twin fans are the tried and tested method but i\'m always looking for different ways of doin things dont like the easy way lol

these are the ones I fitted to mine....

Mk1 MR2 fans are easiest to fit but these Mk2\'s will go onto a RX7 s3 rad with a bit of work.... that celica fan is only 12"... too small I think...
you don\'t want to mess about with the cooling on these engines... get the right rad and put on some fans/ a fan that shift plenty of air

And don\'t forget Smithson in S-c-u-n-thorpe will recore as new for around £100. He might even have core detail from mine?

You can also recore it with a larger core too. I had mine re-cored with double the thickness of core. Cost a bit more but well worth it !

Hi guys thought i\'d let you know wats been happenin since the troubles the other weekend, the 12v fan i had was no where near good enough for the heat given off from the rotary engine so i got some mk1 mr2 fans off ebay and started looking for a rad replacement.

The fans arrived and work perfectly but the rad has to wait as mr bank balance says i\'m not allowed 1 this month or next by the looks of things all car funds goin on insurance deposits - the perils of running 2 cars lol

So decided to give the "different" rad another chance while the funds arrive to get the s3 rad sorted so last sat was spent fitting the mr2 fans which although wasnt very difficult it just time consuming by nightfall sat i\'d got them into place (erm.....they maybe upside down....oops) got everything wired up and refitted the thermoswitch and changed the coolant for the second time in 2 weeks also got the expantion tank from work and fitted that - its amazing where you find perfect matches to random car parts the exact same tank as a 38 kva generator hehe.

Ran out of daylight then and decided not to test in the dark or on sun as mothers day rules were in force lol so managed a couple of hours on tuesday but when it came to starting the engine and topping up the coolant The Duke refused to start which made the alarm bells ring i thought the engine had given up from overheating.

Not one to give up that easily i figured it must just be playing up like it did when i first got it back to york so i charged the battery at work today, borrowed a brand new booster battery and when i got home i took the spark plugs out and gave it a blast through refitted them and tried again.

After about 4 or 5 tries The Duke fired into life (great feeling:)) so i took it out for a warmup drive got up to temp and put the padal to the floor - put a great big smile on my face hehe:D got home and decided to mock up a traffic jam in my drive way sat for 30 - 40 mins just pulling foreward and backwards a couple of feet every 5 mins or so to simulate a bad jam and all went well,
the mr2 fans really shift the air through the rad and the temp gauge stayed halfway up and had no leaks or hiccups i have a couple of questions though,

What is the normal rpm for idling speed? - just asking cos i think i may have cleaned out some smeg from the fuel system puttin my foot down as today it idled at about 850 rpm but all other times it was up at 1100 to 1200 unless this is from the fan power drain

When i first tried the fans the rev gauge bobbled about like a mad thing but stopped when i went up past 2000 rpm i think i\'v seen a thread on here saying this before but cant find it but after the test drive it had stopped cant see why the fans would interfere with the rev gauge but thought i\'d put it out to the experts hehe.

The next big test will be normal york driving probably at the weekend now and close to the by-pass where i can get good airflow if required :driving
Cheers guys

David Nock (RIP)

Book says 750/775 rpm idle speed - that seems a bit low to me? Whatever you can idle at smoothly below 1000 I would have said.

Don\'t see any connection between fans and rev counter though.
