Hi folks, after years of looking, wanting, researching etc I\'m finally about to buy a rotary but now I\'ve just found out Castrol 10W40 mineral isn\'t available anymore??

Can anyone suggest any other brands that do proper mineral oil for use in a standard FD? (Apologies if this has been covered, did a quick search & came up with no concrete answer!) Need to source some before Friday & I live in Ireland so shipping from the UK is feasible I\'m sure as long as I order before close of business tomorrow.

What he said. I\'ve used the Halfords stuff for years with no apparent ill effects. Mind you, the engine doesn\'t stay together long enough for carbon to build up too much :Hammer

Speak to the guys at Opie Oils if you\'re unsure what to get. They know whats what when it comes to oil :)

They won\'t recommend a mineral oil though ;)

Shell Helix is my choice until I do a more complete test of Bardahl Oil

Went with the Halfords 10W40 Mineral oil in the end - couldn\'t find any definitive answers on alternatives like Semi & Fully-synth so went with what Mazda recommended in the first-place when designing the engine & it costs â,¬20 a 5L bottle so happy-days! :Thumbs-up

It seems any of the forums I read all have a lot of inconclusive hear-say & conflicting informed opinions with no measured tests to back them up so I figured feck it: Mazda designed it in the first place so Mazda can\'t afford to be wrong about something so crucial as the oil type used in these engines for both combustion & lubrication which, let\'s be honest, seems like a tough balance to achieve!

Its not just that, Different oils effect the o-ring seals. Some additives swell or shrink the seals depending on the material they are made out of.

I\'ve just stuck some Halfords mineral in the FB and the FD is on the Comma mineral.

I have always used Royal Purple oil in my past cars and while looking on their site they do an oil called break in oil which is mineral oil. I have sent the international division an email asking whether  it would be ok to use this all of the time, or if it is only designed for short term use with no high Rpm\'s.

I will post up what they say when they reply as i rate their products very highy.

I recieved a very fast reply from Royal Purple which was very nice :) here is the reply, he also attached some pictures which i can post up if you want? what are peoples thoughts on his reply?

Jon,

From your email address I believe that you are located in the UK.

Just a guess based on www.grecon.org.

Regardless, the rotary engines (12a, 13b, 13b RE, 13B FD, and the newer Renesis) all benefit from the performance advantages of a higher performing motor oil and can be safely used in these engines.

How do I know?
I’ve used synthetic oils in these engines personally since 1983 predating my employment with Royal Purple starting in 1992.

From my street RX7’s to Showroom stock First Gens and Second gens to full tube frame racing bridge ported engines, you will see an average 2% increase over a mineral oil in output using Royal Purple’s oils in your RX7.

How do I know all this?
Besides the personal use, I have also worked closely with the engineers at Racing Beat in California, along with meeting and discussing this with key engineers from Mazda Japan that were involved with the winning Lemans Mazda rotary powered 787B in 1991 (which won Lemans suing a synthetic oil in the four rotor 20G engine).

Why does Mazda then continue to put that disclaimer in the Owner’s Manual?  Well â€" that’s a question for Mazda and the Japan ‘culture’ experts.
It was originally stated in the late 60’s during the development of the 10A engine and they had problems with a particular brand of synthetic oil that they tried (probably an ester based oil) which would have been very hard on the rotor seals on the eccentric shaft.  Once that statement was issued, no one within the corporate culture wants to put their reputation on the line to change it.

I go through a lot of this in the FAQ section of our website.

What type of RX7 (model) are you buying?

I’ll be glad to recommend the weight and type for your particular car.

Thanks for choosing to use our products.

Sincerely,

David

erm, this seems to directly contradict the statement released by Mazda a few years back saying that MINERAL ONLY should be used in ALL rotaries. (See the thread in the RX8 section for more details).

This argument will rage until the end of time. I use mineral for two reasons. 1) Always have and havn\'t had any issues with it. 2) Pip showed me the insides of an engine that blew running synthetic and the housings were caked in carbon.

just my opinion though

Graeme, if I am not mistaken, that engine was using OMP isn\'t it? Because I vaguely remember reading somewhere that it was perfectly fine to use Fully Synthetic Oil, if the OMP was blocked off? Correct me if I am wrong please.
