Thats short, because of probably running lean and or boost creep?

But I have read a lot of mails and talking to other people running a midpipe without having changed the ecu.

But if I need one, should I go for the apexi ecu or a haltech?

bnaellis

Hi Skim,

Other people may do it and have no issue but it\'s not advisable because you will run leaner than car was designed to so it\'s better safe than sorry. As for which ecu that really depends on whether there is a good tuner where you are. If you have atuner that is capable with both haltech and apexi then I am sure most would agree the haltech would be better, but with the apexi you can mess around with stuff yourself with doing any damage. I personally like the apexi because I like to fiddle so am always changing some setting for the sake it.

Is it possible to set the apexi Power FC up yourself, whe dont have rx7 tuners here in the Netherlands.

Damn, I really dont know what to do.

WOuld bigger injectors help at first? What would you suggest. I think I probably should check my compression first to see if it is oke further.

Do you know if towing your rx7 is bad.

bnaellis

Hi Mate,
I don\'t know if owing it is bad, but the later version apexi comes already mapped for induction, midpipe, intercooler back box. So the base map would be fine on your car. You should not need injectors for just midpipe and back box, but this is something you can see with the apexi if you need bigegr ones anyway.

Hi, when you say \'later version Apexi\' what do you mean? Are you talking about the 16bit ones or a new one thats come out?

Fish

It depends where you purchase the Apexi from. From my limitied knowledge about the PFC, they come with some form of base map, so its almost true plug and drive option, unlike the Haltech which will need mapping.

I know of cars that have had bigger injectors and an aftermarket fuel presure regulator to cut out the leaning process. But this is NOT a proper cure, the ECU is.

If going for the Apexi ECU you will need either the hand controller or the datalogit product. The datalogit connects up to a laptop and gives more options allowing better definition.

Mail Geff for options.

Dan

Edited to add: BPG, all the Apexis are 16Bit, just different versions per year of car.

BPG

So if I bought an Apexi PFC for a 96 RZ would it be mapped for a induction, midpipe, intercooler & back box.

bnaellis

Yes it would.
I have the same on my car and it definetly comes mapped for that. Off the top of my head I can\'t quite remember I believe it\'s on any apexi version 5.04 or higher. The versions below this are mapped for just I think induction and back box.

It depends where you get it from. If you go to one of the many places that sell Apexi products without knowing rotary\'s, you get a base map. If you was to go to ReWorx they should be able to put a close map on it. Plus as you are in the UK, they would be happy to sort out some form of mapping with it fitted to the car.

The problem Skim has is that he is not in the UK.

Hi Dan,

You can call me Rogier, yes indeed its my problem that I live in the Netherlands no dealers here. I have my own store in ordering parts and books from japan so getting an Apex ecu shouldnt be that kind of problem but setting it up will.

Can you set it up by installing an AF meter?

Fish

Rogier, using an AF meter will help quite a bit. Help to tell if its running rich or lean, although I thibk the Apexi will also display this.

If you wanted to go that bit further you could also install an EGT probe. This gives even more details of heat that the engine is producing. Most of the good engine mappers will go via this then via an AF meter.

ive also been looking at ecu\'s for a while. but my car is a 92 so the apexi will not be mapped for induction , full decat exhaust, backbox and uprated intercooler from what i can gather. is there anywhere that would be able to tell me?

also i read somewhere else on the forum that the apexi ecu\'s are all designed or premapped to run on 100 octane fuel because they are from japan. Does this lead to a problem in fuellin in this country if runnin the same base mods but with different octane levels?

bnaellis

The stock ecu on a rx7 is also mapped for 100 octane fuel so it makes no difference. If the apexi is bad ofor us because we only have 98 octane then the stock ecu is alo bad. This is a very debatable topic you can ask 100 people and get approx 50 different views on this, but I personally have looked into it a bit and can find no reason for an rx7 being affected at all by running 97 or 98 octane fuel when the ecu was originally mapped for 100
If so there would be problems on every car rx7 imported in this country standard or not.

I would have thought the ignition advance would be affected by octane changes not the fueling ... so if these ECU mods just change the fueling I can\'t see a problem

FYI...

I have Apexi PFC with datalogit and wideband a/f as well.

The stock maps that come with the PFC are very rich indeed, and the timing is fairly conservative if not the smoothest pattern I have seen.

As being far too rich is better than being far too lean, I think Apexi really went safety first.

This is running downpipe, midpipe, intake, etc etc.

Big improvements can be made to increase power and smoothness through altering these maps. Taking out fuel rather than putting more in, and better timing including split timing. You must do this with wideband tho!

I think the recent rolling road session at G-Force, where all the Apexi runners with stock maps had a/f ratio\'s off the scale proves my point ;)

You must keep an eye on injector duty though, as they go up to about 90% with the stock map on stock injectors at 0.9 bar.

Hope this is of help!
