Same thing happened to me about 3 years ago. They said it was MY fault as it was Myself who is/was responsible for checking my Tax code/paying the right amount of Tax. I had a bill for £4100 just three weeks before Christmas. I went to the tax office and begged and pleaded to no avail at the time. They told me as a home owner it ALL had to be paid from imediate efect no ifs or buts, as was told as a home owner to borrow from my house or get a credit card ! Eventually I paid half and the remainder was paid via Tax code change over another year. I am and was just PAYE aswell.

I have just got off the phone with them and it is looking the same way for me to be honest.  They confirmed all was correct but because I did not contact them within 12 months of the error (as I didn\'t know there was an error) they cannot do anything apart from get the money.

Waiting for a call from repayments department and I think this can collected over 3 years.

Bugger..... frickin hate HMRC.

HMRC are unbelievable (I\'d insert a stronger work but the swear filter wouldn\'t let me )

About 3 years ago, out of the blue, I got a letter from HMRC saying I\'d underpaid £30 (yes, just £30) tax on my business. They threatened (and that was the tone of the letter) that unless I paid up within 7 days they would force my business to close!! Although I had information to prove I hadn\'t underpaid, I was advised by my accountant to pay and then seek a refund, as the HMRC at that time were taking about 4 weeks to open incoming correspondence, as they were so busy. I couldn\'t allow any risk to my business, my main source of income, for the sake of £30, so I paid up.

I\'ve still to get my £30 back.

I sent all my documentation off to HMRC to prove I\'d paid my dues, had a long telephone conversation with the lady handling my appeal, who seemed to accept I was correct, then nothing happened. Phoned in again to find the person dealing with my case was no longer there and "would I like to speak to someone else" (ie start all over again ). It was taking far too much of my time to bother for the sake of £30 but, as you can tell, it still irks me that they can get away with it :Grrr

If I had a bill from HMRC for a few £k\'s, like you guys, and having had this experience over £30, I\'m not sure how I\'d feel!

Sorry, rant 2 over...................:):)

It\'s to do with the automated computer system installed (says Panorama!) and how it handled (or, as it seemed, didn\'t handle) job movements.

Mostly mind, for people with two jobs (it would default the tax code based on each of the incomes when infact the earnings should be added together to determine the tax payable). Hence the number of people underpaying..

Not nice for anyone on PAYE who simply assumes the system works ok!!
