Hi, Ive just recently bought a fd3s, its fitted with a on/off paddle clutch, it is producing around 315bhp when it was at WGT.

I want to change the clutch to a normal disc type.
What hp or torque will the standard clutch generally take. What are the other recommended clutch\'s, and also is it especially difficult to change the clutch, Ive read briefly about a nut that is torqued upto 360lbs? Is this for the flywheel, if so I shouldnt need to remove it to change the clutch should I?

Thanks for the help
Phil

think the standard clutch is good up to 350 bhp ish but im sure someone will give you more details,

Hope this helps

You don\'t need to remove the flywheel unless it\'s fecked, if it\'s slipping chances are it\'ll be a bit rough if not should be ok.

I took the flywheel nut off with a hammer and chisel easily and hardly damaged the nut, i didnt need to put it back together, i just took an engine apart for fun but would\'nt want to use the hammer to torque it back up

The flywheel itself is also really easy to get off if need be, once the nuts off just hit it fairly lightly in a circular motion and it pops off, leave the nut on a little bit so it does\'nt fall off.

Thanks, theres no slip, its probably only done 10,000 miles. its just not nice to drive with the paddle clutch, i think the previous owner was planning even more modifications for higher power. But I will use the car most days and want a normal clutch, I dont mind  a heavy clutch, but its very much, on/off and difficult to drive, cheers for the help, if it\'ll handle the power ok, i\'ll get a standard clutch. I had also wounderd if I just replace the clutch plate, is it possible to reuse the uprated pressure plate? not sure if its different for the paddle clutch, I\'ll have to look at it properly.

I had one of the Exedy \'stage 1\' clutches,w hich I think are jsut a pressure prlate with a harder clamping force. It was ok, but started to slip when I went beyond 350, and wasn\'t the most positive ever at about 340.

There was an Exedy single plate cerametallic for sale on here a while ago, that would be perfect :) You get the fly as well, so nice quick revvy responsiveness :)

I have a single plate stage 2 Exedy Cerametallic clutch for sale :D

Can I confirm then that the standard clutch should be fine for 315hp

Worth bearing in mind that there\'s a big difference between something that will \'cope\', and something \'easily handle\' - I didn\'t know what I was missing until I went to a decent clutch. All of a sudden, pickup seems a lot more instant.

You could just replace the friction disc on the standard one, it\'s about £70 I think. Mine grips fine and I think I\'m running about the same as you.

damehyndman, is your clutch still for sale? Info on it, useage, etc?
