Difference between Jap Spec RX7 and UK spec RX7?

I\'m currently considering a number of options on the RX7 front and have been considering both UK and Jap cars.  UK cars obviously are a quite a bit cheaper to insure but by going simply on insurance costs, is there anything substantial that i\'d be missing out on between the models, by going either way?  I\'ve done a lot of reading on the site and off it, but, its not entirely clear!

I realise that the Jap Type R is running at 280bhp compared to the UKs 255bhp, but how does that actually affect the accleration in the long run?

I\'ve read in some places stating that standard 0-60 of the UK model is a shocking 6.7 seconds?  Have I been massively misled by these books and sites?

Especially when you consider that the Jap car does it in around 5 seconds!  If thats the case, then a Jap is the obvious choice....  I know speed isn\'t everything, but, i\'m already runnin a modded 200sx with a 0-60 at around 5.5-6.0 or so seconds so obviously I want it to be pokey, and if they UK RX7 is slower, I feel i\'d be going the wrong way in power terms!

Cheers :wave

6.7 secs? if its running on one rotor maybe! My FC b4 the bridgeport was doing the 0-60 dash in just over 6 secs and that is heavier with less power!

Most of the stats seem to say the UK FD should do 60 in about 5.5 the JDM car in circa 5.

Spec levels were different, UK cars had leather and no rear seats whereas you get leather/non leather, 2 & 2+2 as well as auto in the Jap cars. There were loads of versions in Japan it is mentioned on another thread (in this section I believe) but in essence you had type R, type R1/R2, type X, type RS, RZ, RSR, Bathurst, and then the newer Spirit R cars. I suspect I\'ve missed a few there.

UK cars cost more to purchase (but normally come with history) and are likely to have covered more miles.

Depends on what you want JDM type R with 280 FWHP isn\'t going to be that much quicker than a UK car with 255 FWHP. Also remember there are plenty of JDM cars with 265 FWHP.

Also the FD will feel a lot quicker and more composed than a 200SX (obviously depending on what you\'ve done to it)

The UK car comes with all the bells and whistles, but also a second cat ( a pre cat) and is tuned for ordianry un leaded petrol.  I seem to remember it \'only\' has ~225 BHP a a result and the magazines had it down for the 0-60 sprint in 5.5 seconds.

Depending on the year and the model, the JDM cars either had 255, 265 or 280 BHP.

Mazda quoted UK cars as 237bhp, but once you\'ve done a few mods that\'s irrelevant.

As a car for weekend driving only, which (jap or uk) is the nicer car to drive?   Are the mod con\'s nice and useful (eg cruise control) or is the out right power the main gain?

I take it, to remove the extra pre-cat on the UK model, something like a Power FC is required?  Or can you get away with removing just one cat and not need a remap on the uk model?

Finally, could a SAFC 2 be used to do the fueling rather than an Power FC if you are looking to keep modding to a minimum??

Agreed, once you\'ve done the basic mods and ECU its totally irrelevent imho

Hallo Matt,

As others have said, UKs were quoted as 237bhp.

I have a re-print from Autoar+Motor magazine, from \'92, when they tested a UK FD......0-60 was timed at 6.0s dead.

As for the "pre-cat", which is still a cat, mine was removed before I bought the car, and has a free flow K&N panel filter (supposedly better flow than Mazda paper ones), and in 5years and 20k miles, never had a problem. I guess it is all degrees of modification, there will be a point after which something will go wrong. I suppose it is something no-one wants to find, though, \'cos once you do, its too late!!
