I\'m running a 1984 1st gen with the standard 12a engine and standard nikki carb.
The car has tubular headers and a stainless steel exhaust.
It\'s always run great until this morning when it flooded while trying to start it.
I got it going by leaving the choke in and feathering the gas but it then refused to pull away and produced some loads of massive violent backfires.
I\'ve nursed it around 20 miles today but everytime I gave it some throttle, it lost all power and backfired. It would just about pull away on light revs.
What the hell could be causing this, it was sweet as a nut when I parked it up last night?
I thought I\'d maybe I was running on the trailing alone if the leading was still flooded but I\'ve had the plugs out, cleaned, dried and warmed them but nothing.
Won\'t start at all now.

Have you checked for spark on all plugs Ian?

Not yet because of the rain.
Definitely had a spark earlier though when it was running rough cause at least it was driving.
I\'ll have a look at it tomorrow night if it\'s dry but I\'m not going to risk going to R7 in it unless I\'m confident it\'s ok, I don\'t want to spend the weekend waiting to be recovered.

Its so long since I have been near a gen 1 I can\'t remember if it uses points and a condensor, if so these are likely candidates for your problem or still ignition related if not , i.e.  rotor arm arcing, dead coil or the like
All the best Clive

captainbizzaro

Yeah i was wondering whether it might be a dead leading coil.

Ian65

I\'ve got a mountain of spare parts, I\'ll try swapping some parts out tomorrow if it won\'t start.
Sounds like ignition to me as well.
Thanks for your advice.

Yeah, all fixed now.
Leading coil had gone down. Swapped it for an good one and normal service has been resumed.
Thanks to everyone who offered advice.

Nice one Tim!

Cheers! How far is your drive in the morning?

Ian65

100 miles but I\'m not bringing the Mazda. I want to put some miles on it locally before I attempt a 200 mile round trip to make sure it\'s ok.
I\'ll look out for you in the morning, I should be there btw 9 - 10.

captainbizzaro

Fair enough mate, I"ve got a 164 mile trek so should be interesting. I\'ve got Green Flag haha.
