Just want to know what peoples opinion would be on gettin either of these turbos, the fors and against really.

The 4088 is 600 quid, 4094 is around 1300 quid, I can\'t see there being a huge difference in hp between the 2?

The 4088 will require a BOV whereas the 4094 does need one due to the porter shroud, however can you get a porter shroud on the 4088?

SiH

You can get ports machined into pretty much any housing dude - the costs varies :)
Just because it\'s not got a ported shroud, doesn\'t mean you can\'t run without a BOV. But let\'s not get into this argument again :D
Thought about the new Garrett GTX range? Although I think they only drop town tot he 42xx series?

If the 4094 is an \'R\', that means it\'s a roller bearing, so you should get slightly quicker spool than a journal bearing equivalent (although how much seems to be open to debate, but if I had a turbo that size I\'d want everything I could to help my spool!)

Grant Monkhouse

I was actually wondering if you can get the turbo ported, or do they already gave a potted shroud as it is a large frame turbo?

The only reason I would go for a BOV would to be to get rid of the chatter caused by the back pressure?

I haven\'t looked at the gtx series but a gtx42 is too big. Even though I\'d have very large porting on myengine.

Do you know where I can look at the gtx series turbos.

Dont mean to go off topic slightly but i read that journal bearing were a no no for rotaries due to the heat the bearings would be exposed to?
Or is that more rubbish i have been reading?

I would echo that!

Also a GT4088 isnt going to be a genuine at £600!  Not if it is a Ball Bearing version...they are about £1400

RUBBISH lol :Tongue1

What bearings do you think stock turbos on a FC and FD run?... let me tell you.. thats right journal bearing

What bearings run on a T04R,T78,T88,T04E,T51R KAI? ... thats right journal bearings

I\'ve heard people say that about roller/ball bearings before, but not journals!
Journals are about as hardy as they come.

4088 is journal bearing, isn\'t it, not ball/roller? AFAIK the \'r\' after the name designates that it\'s a roller bearing. i.e T28/T28r - r is the roller bearing version.

EDIT:
Quote from: Garrett websiteIf there\'s an "R" on the end of a model name, this means the unit is ball bearing. So, a GT4294 is not ball bearing; whereas a GT4294R is ball bearing.

I\'m guessing the prices you are talking about are from RX7Store? If so, don\'t forget that you have to pay VAT and customs (You WILL get stopped, I did), that you\'ll have to wait for months, and that their customer service is sh!t.

yeh journals are fine on rotaries and are the stronger type of bearing, rollerbearing are the ones that supposedly dont like heat.... but again its all open to debate... just like the running with and without a bov...

Nik da Greek

I\'ve got a big fat fduk-off GReddy R-type BOV on mine....and it doesn\'t open till really late for some reason so I get the chatter thing anyway then a big cough from the BOV. I thought twins sounded daft with no BOV, but this sounds exactly like a big turkey being flushed down a small toilet. Hurrah for single turbos :rollin

+1 for roller bearings not liking excessive heat (internet pub gossip, never seen it proved anywhere), journal bearings being tough as old boots BTW

Zoidberg FTW!

It\'s dejavu all over again! Not gonna give you the satisfaction of asking "WTF is a Zoidberg" this time though hahaha. It\'s in many ways just as ridiculous a noise as the twins with no BOV, only louder and deeper. I suppose that\'s progress :rollin

I got my GT4088 from RX7store (when the exchange rate was better) and it worked out about £650 landed. FYI it is a genuine GT4088, journal bearing. Nice power delivery if you have good porting (although having blown the engine up AGAIN after less than 300 miles, can\'t really report much more than that)

A genuine journal bearing gt 4088 is around 600, a ball bearing turbo of the same size is around 1300.

As on the ball bearing turbos being a no no on rotaries I think is rubbish. How hot is it actually going to get when it is water cooled? And on a street car where it is not constantly being thrashed?
