Has anyone actually used the Hurley 3 spring corner seals?

As title really.

In theory they look a big improvment, I was pretty bemused when I saw the normal style, though they clearly do work, so wondered if the Hurley ones in actual working conditions really equate to being better?

Any experiences welcomed

I have used them.... they are good but they have 3 springs and if one of the spring comes of the corner seal...... your housing is gone mate.... I would say Hurley seals are good but there is a considerable level of risk involved..... when i was putting them in.... one of the spring from the corner seal came off.... had to strip the whole engine again and got it washed completely..... so you can see what it did to me..... the rest..... Mike hurley is a good man no doubt about that...seek some advise from him before you use them mate concerning this...

hope this helps:yes

I think I have found that Hurley seals are good for specific applications, but like Mir has said above, sometimes people have big issues with them

FD3S Efini, yes from Gloucester, owned my FD about 5 1/2 years, must admit I very rarely see any others about the area in the time I\'ve owned mine.

As regards the Hurley corner seals, if you are going to use them I would advise getting new rubber inserts for them as opposed to re-using the old ones (although you can re-use the old ones as long as they haven\'t disintegrated).

As regards to the spring coming off in the rotor housing this is one fault of the hurley seals that I have never heard of and only way I could think of this happening is if one comes off when you are assembling the engine, otherwise I would think it would be near impossible unless an apex seal or something else chipped first.

I have hurley seals throughout and I am building another couple of engines gradually for use in other projects, but would say that the only hurley seals that I will be using in them are the corner seals as I feel that there are better side and apex seals availabe (this is just my opinion).
As said I like their corner seals but that is my personal taste and many others will tell you different its just down to personal opinion.

have any of you guys put some serious heat through them yet ;)

mazda springs are inconel (sp) and the small springs in the hurleys are not, not really suitable for turbo vehicles, hot starting will become harder over time

stick with FD mazda corner springs - you wont have an issue!

Sidzrx

Yes have run the engine hard, and no problems whatsoever

There is no issue with the hurley seals, the only way there would be a problem is if a spring was dropped into the engine on assembly by accident, just as an oem spring would cause an issue if you dropped one into the engine without realising. It\'s just about taking due care when assembling the block.

I live 50/50 between Chetlenham and Gloucester.
Ive rarely seen any RXs round here, just a few, 3 of them friends of mine. Only one once when I was in mine, drove past a dark green (i think) FD broken down at Morrissons petrol station when we was out checking AFRs. TBH most people realise my car is an RX7.

I previously had solid ERC corner seals (and I think I have lost one, so cant re-use them despite no damage) which had no provision for rubber plugs, but I got new ones now regardless. Didnt know about the inconel, but just didnt like the standard spring style, despite it clearly working.

Hmm, interesting. Hard choice really.

Hammer

i dont like the idea with the small springs, when you strip down a motor and you see the carbon build up behind the corner seal, i start to think the carbon would get inbetween the coils on the springs and therefore stop the spring working right.
Also the heat could weaken the springs and a coil could snap off or the spring snap in half.  This happens to suspension coils over time.

I could be wrong, just my opinion.  nothing wrong with mazda springs.

BlitzBoy

I use mazda springs with my Atkins solid corner seals, they take a lot of abuse.
Dont think you can better Mazda OEM on the spring front, all the top drag cars in the UK use Mazda OEM springs

All good and valid points, cheers.

These are the ones I had in mine...

I think I might go for the atkins ones, probably a lot easier than trying to order them from ERC.

Cheers all.

AtomicRex

I wouldnt recommend those ones....only use the ones that have rounded edges in the slot.
