if you search \'mazda savanna\' then you will see fc. sais it should run on 92 ron. bare in mind then the first fc came out it was 1985. did they have 98 ron then?

fd sais 98 ron.

i know this is not the be all and end all of discussion / topic but i found it interesting.

anyone got the original manual for fc? does it say what ron to run?

EGI will run on 92 RON happily.

Anything turbo and particularly those with chipped ECU\'s from the land of the rising sun - they really ought to be on 99 RON for safety

All non turbo rotaries will run on very low octane safely.

Remember those across the pond as they use low octane fuel in general, not sure if their highest is 95 RON.  As long as you remember that if yours is a JDM car then it will have been tuned using high octane Jap fuel and they use very high numbers over there so unless its been tuned over here then turbo rotaries need quality fuel, NA\'s will run on low octane very nicely as long as its unleaded.
I actually posed this question on the RX7club as the map I am using is geared for 95 RON and was not too sure what I would need to do to the map to run it on 99 RON fuel. The answer I got back from BDC was nothing is needed and the extra octane would be a good safety margin if anything.

I think this is one of the jobs of the knock sensor and will retard/advance timing accordingly to octane quality.  Please correct me if I am wrong on that one, not 100% sure.

It only retards, but the problem is it\'s detecting the event having happened already - so kind of a barn door sensor if you get me.  It does actually work mind - I was watching the engine whilst someone was operating the loud pedal and had the emanage logging enabled - gentle bang with a hammer on the engine and you can see it retard a couple of degrees.

As I understand it - the RON rating is a \'resistance to knocking\' rating - the higher the number the better - but the US use a different scale to here in the UK.
