Thanks for the comments guys.

My plan is to spend a day or 2 having a good check over everything i can on the engine, gearbox, suspension (wear on bushes etc), pipework etc then take it to WGT for an engine compression test and health check.

If it needs a re-build, it needs a re-build. From what i can see, they all need one at some point, so i have included this contingency into my overall spending. Besides, it would give me the chance to have it streetported (??) and built to last :o

You\'ll have to excuse my lack of knowledge on rotary engines, the only cars i have worked on and modified over the last 5 years are Mitsubishi EVO\'s. This RX7 is more of a project, to learn about a different car. I\'m picking things up already though.

Quote from: Swanny_UK;694401A rather cynical opinion there. Without getting into a which tuner to go to argument, I\'ve never had an issue with WGT, everything has been done, at least,to my satisfaction. They have always gone above and beyond for me. You can check out the various company reviews on FDUK for example, WGT is overwhelmingly recommended.

That\'s a well good idea. Cheers for the link :Thumbs-up

Quote from: ad4m1;694168You bought an rx7 blind? Sorry but that\'s the worst thing you could do. There are so many potential things to be wrong not just the engine.
To give you an idea: engine compression, water seals, rats nest, worn gearbox, worn interior, worn pillowballs and that\'s before you mention the bodywork.

He just brought the car dont scare the .... out of him. Yes these cars are expensive and yes there are loads of problems that can arrise but just giving a advance warning to be wary that costs can build up is enough of a warning. he might have brought it really cheap or brought expecting a rebuild. I brought mine blind with only crappy cellphone pics, paid whole amount with no reciept, the guy was in tyne and wear and i live in london, car wasnt registered in my name for a month, when car was delivered i couldnt fit in drivers seat so had my mum drive it to my house and still after paying 10,000 in parts on top of the 5000 for car i am still very happy.

Yeah, welcome to the club and don\'t let the scaremongers put you off :D. My first FD was like a grenade with the pin out with the mods it had, and I knew less about rotaries than I do the dark side of the moon when I bought it but it survived a year and a half of my hamfisted abuse before it went wrong (and then only cos I crashed it lol :o). Just cos it\'s an unkown quantity doesn\'t mean it\'s about to explode at any minute :Nono!

i don\'t think there are many FDs in the UK with sub-50k chassis miles, especially the earlier cars. don\'t let people scare you, even if it needs an engine refresh you\'ve found yourself an awesome low-mileage car :)

s2thoudriver

Thanks for the replies guys. I\'m not scared about it, more interseted in what is going to turn up.

I didn\'t pay top dollar for it, so i have some money to play with, all i do know is that he chassis mileage is geniune and there is no rust underneath (going to be undersealed asap!). It hasn\'t been heavily modified so don\'t expect it to be a ticking bomb and every modded part on it is one brand (HKS).

One thing i am relieved to hear is that the fuel pumps are good for about 350bhp. A known issue with EVOs is that people turn up the boost, fit an induction and de-cat but don\'t uprate the fuel pump.

I\'m sure all will be revealed and confirmed in the next few weeks......

neil_jdmr

I am on standard fuel system still Pump/injectors/fpr etc and making 326bhp at 0.9bar and that is pretty much maxxing out the injectors.

Was running 90-96% injector duty but been on a new fuel filter the last 2000 miles and the highest ive seen is 92.9% at 0.92bar although it is now usually sub 90%.

For any further power or even if i fitted a larger ic i would deffo need to upgrade the fuel pump and fpr at the minimum i expect.

As above, mine ran to near 340 bhp with stock fueling except for upgraded to 850 injectors all round cos like Neil the duty cycle was maxing out otherwise. Much more and as already said, it would definitely have wanted uprated pump and FPR

s2thoudriver

ok, i think first on the list of money throws to WGT will be a big service, including fuel filter, then compression check, then wait for the  "well, i have identified that the following things need work..."

chrisJDM

hey welcome to the club, good luck with it.  I pretty much bought both my FD\'s blind, the red one i got from manchester, won it on ebay and got a train up and just drove it away, the yellow one i have now i had delivered so didnt even go look at it and was purchased from a mrc member

super7

good luck matey hope it all works out well, dont no y ppl r so negitaive u might take and the comp test might be fine and u could have years of sideways fun! for no exta cost! then spend some money on some crazy mods?

good luck ben

s2thoudriver

Yep, that\'s the general idea. I have another car for my daily driver so it\'s more of a weekend toy/project.

I\'ve done EVOs to death now and without going down the whole stroker/forged route, there was little else for me to play with.

Oh don\'t worry, i\'m a sucker for modifying, i just can\'t help it

I\'ve already started looking at single turbo convertions, uprated intercoolers, new tyres, Apexi FC etc etc but realise i am getting ahead of myself!! I\'ll see what essentials need spending first, then start modding it.

educate first, then spend!

Should be arriving next week, probably Wednesday, so i\'ll be able to have a better idea then.

In the meantime, please feel free to advise on mods that i will need to do to have it runing at a reliable (?!?) 340ish bhp. I\'m pressuming a de-cat (if not already done), Apexi FC and remap would be first?

Mods so far are HKS hard pipes, HKS exhaust, HKS filters, HKS coilovers (probably rock hard if experience is anything to go by!)

Thanks

Rob

...Finally :driving

Ok, i\'ve only had 15 minutes to look at it before i left for work, but first impressions are that it\'s pretty good.

There\'s no sign of accident damage anywhere, all the panels are perfectly aligned, it doesn\'t throw out any smoke of any colour. It has the original handbook, the passenger side flare and even has a lovely Mazdaspeed steering wheel.

It needs a damn good clean though, it\'s filthy!!

Only things of concern are that the doors seem hard to unlock (could just need oil?) and the guy let it run out of petrol. That and the front left arch has a tiny bit of rust on the lip which will need treating.

Looking forward to getting home later for a good look around it and having a good drive of it!

In the meantime, does anyone know the best place to get accurate touch up paint from? (think it\'s called Montego blue)

I\'ll also be starting shopping soon and i think first on the list will be an Apexi FC as everyone on here seems to have them. If anyone has one for sale, please let me know.

Any other initial modification recomendations are more than welcome. It has a HKS exhaust, HKS filters, HKS hardpipe kit and HKS coilovers but that\'s it as far as i can see.

Thanks

Rob

p.s i will take some pictures and get them up. I intend to do some before and after ones for when i spend a full day valeting it (it needs it!)

Get a 3" decat pipe, a pfc and some quality mapping and its hey presto.

I personally, have spent anything else on regular servicing.
