Still running the motor in and my water temps at 50-60 mph off boost cruise was between 88 and 90 and it went up to 92-94 in traffic before I put the fan on, im using a FD rad and I got told this was to hot so I had my thermostat removed at the weekend, and i had the right 82 degree thermostat in, I had the thermostat middle removed to see how that affected it.

Cruising at 30-40 and temps are 84-86
Motorway however the temps are between 72 and 82 degrees.

Does this sound to cold? I could blank the rad up? or put a lower temp thermostat in.

Its a real swine to warm up in the morning and the temps go up fast in traffic. Not sure what to do:rolleyes:

Don\'t remove the thermostat! lol get an uprated FC radiator, mines about 4" thick lol What does the oil temp say?

G@NDY

oil temps at cruise are 68-72 degrees.

I will try and take my FC out tomorrow (if its stopped leaking coolant again!) and plug the laptop into the ECU and see what the water temps are on mine for you :)

Mine are around 84 on average but will go to 90+ when in traffic. My fan comes on at 88 but my temps can go down to just over 80 at times when in the cruise. This however is without the car tuned and running a fairly standard map in the Apexi.

opening temps for the thermostat are around 82 and fully open by 95 deg by the manual.

what oil temps should my fc be running- normal driving and flat out??

G@NDY

Adam, im not sure about flat out as my car isnt mapped yet mate.

Pip shouted at me for doing this mod, he said the engine will get to different water readings and the rear block will run hot. He said Im a very naughty gandy and need to put a OEM thermostat back in. Ooooooooooops!!

Running rich seems to make the temps sore in traffic, especially if you\'re idles a little high or it\'s rich down in the lower rev/vac range.

I was running really rich - around 9/10 after startup, and just pulling a bit of fuel reduced the rate the water temps were climbing.

You\'re temps don\'t sound too far off - I would have thought mid 80\'s is fine - provided the rad can keep the heat off when you give it some ;)

I eventually bought a 75 degree sard thermostat from rhd japan, not cheap tho at £60. It has worked a treat, car warms up well, and it cruises at 82-84 all day long :)

Any idea what the stock thermostat opens at ?

you CAN remove the thermostat,, without overheating the block
PROVIDED you thread a 1/2 inch NPT bung into the bypass hole under the thermostat

-- its a bypass thermostat where the coolant will recirc back to the block and not radiator when under temp
the thermostat opens and in doing so,, closes the recirc hole

hence,, if you want to run no thermostat,, you blank the bypass hole

as for thermostats there is 82 ( 12a/13b ) and 87 C degree units which suit all SD rotary engines from early 1987 downwards

late s4,, and s5 ( all those with the 3 bolt plastic thermoneck ) use the FD thermostat
of which its usually 195 F ( 90 C ) ,,but can get in 82 C ( 180 F )

anything lower rated is aftermarket or cross referenced from another manufacturer,, particularly saab and volvo
( which is where you will find 71 C examples )
