a very comman fault not sure if you can get this off the shelf but i doubt you will find a good one in a breakers, have you pulled the rear seat base out too?

Mine was just plated in the original bracket and the inside plated too. Actually made a lot of difference to the way the back end felt.

I believe this to be the main reason most RX7\'s get sold. The owner panics when he sees this. They all go at this point Ross. It\'s the worst design fault on the 1st Gens.
My FB just started with cracks in it\'s \'upper tie rod reinforcing plate\' a couple of years ago. The rusting had started behind the back seat as well. I was lucky \'cos I was waiting for it to happen.
I spent quite a bit (£200 a side) on having a local Triumph TR body specialist sort it out...I took the interior out beforehand, which saved downtime. I spent a lot because the car is still under 55,000 miles and we\'re keeping it.
The TR man was able to take the  triangular mounting plate frames off and managed to weld some more 10 guage plates into the frames. Then he plated the body before replacing the reinforcing plates.
I didn\'t feel much difference \'cos I caught it early, but like Shaun, must be very floppy to drive if the rust is bad because the rear axle side load comes up into the chassis here.

rossonza

Great pics. Thanks for the info guys... thought it was going to be hard to sort out.
looks like a mate may be able to Fab a plate up and weld it for me so not all hope Is lost.
Rear sills need doing aswell...may get it all done at the same time. Ill keep you posted.

Anything else worth checking for major rust?
What are the front quarters like?

Thanks

if you have a look though my build it will give you a bit of an idea mate

Mine wasn\'t good, the drivers side you could get your finger through after tacking a wire brush to the rust !

Its all repairable, mine should be good for another 20yrs in that area !
